I have my first interview on Monday and I'm still a little confused about one thing: If my interviewer says "tell me about yourself," is it appropriate to say, "well, what would you like to know? My family? My education? My reasons for choosing medicine?"

I think the approach that I've found works best when you're in that situation is to think of it as an opportunity to direct the interview into an area of strength for you, use that to paint a good picture of yourself for the interviewer and ideally, introduce how your background led you to choose medicine. Rather than putting it back in the interviewer's hands, I'd spend some time beforehand thinking about how I wanted to respond if I got that question, and take it down that path when the time came. If the interviewer wants to know something specific, he or she will ask, but this way you've already set a direction and tone for the interview.
