My invite came as an answering machine message from my POI. POI told me the dates and said an administrative person would be contacting me to schedule the interview. Then POI said "if you need to get in touch with me" my phone # is x and my email address is y.

What's the proper protocol here?

Should I call and accept the invitation? If I get voice mail, is it okay to accept on VM? Or over email? I do need to respond, correct?

I *know* I am overthinking this, I feel like an idiot for even asking... but first personal impressions count, and this whole process is just *so* ridiculously competitive, I want to do the most appropriate thing (or at least avoid doing the most wrong thing). What do you think?

SERIOUSLY overthinking it. Respond however is most convenient for you. The prof isn't going to spend even a single moment thinking about your response medium. They aren't taking notes on you. Yet.

Wait for the administration-type person to call, and then accept. If you'd like you can also send the POI a quick email or voicemail saying that you received the message, thanks for the invite and that you'll see him on February Whateverith. 🙂

I'd call the administrative person, and I'd email the POI, this gives you the opportunity to think about what you are saying before you send it. Write the email... read it... walk away, come back and read it again... If you are happy with it, send it. Takes all the pressure off.
