I've been invited to interview at some programs after initially being waitlisted. If I didn't make the initial cut of interviews, it seems like my application is lacking in some regard in the opinion of the program. Can the interview make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things when it comes to match lists? I just don't want to go through the hassle of an interview if it's unrealistic that I would be able to match there.

sounds to me like they ran through their list of preferred applicants, then some withdrew. now they interview a few more because they want to make sure they fill their spots.

Programs don't have enough interview days to interview every qualified candidate. So if you're invited - even off of a waitlist - the program considers you qualified.

As for the question of what an interview can do for you - a great interview can get an average applicant to the top of the rank list.

If you'd like to match there and you don't already have too many interviews then it's worth your time. But if you're already going to 10+ interviews and you're not very interested in the program then it's not worth the bother of traveling.

They won't rank you and it does you no good to rank them if you don't go to the interview. The more the better.
