I don't know if this is something that everyone does, but I always make up a mix of songs to psych myself up for interviews.

Here's this year's list (Don't laugh at my terrible taste in music.. or at least do so quietly..):

Take a Chance on Me- ABBA
Maybe This Time- Glee
Don't Stop Believin'- Glee AND Journey
One Way or Another- Blondie
Take on Me- Aha
Walk Away- Kelly Clarkson (not really relevant, but a good confidence builder)
I Won't Back Down- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Takin Care of Business- Bachman Turner Overdrive
Come Together- The Beatles (Again, not really relevant, but makes me feel cool)
Don't Bring Me Down- ELO
Thank God I'm a Country Boy- John Denver
American Girl- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
You're the Best- Joe Esposito
Livin' on a Prayer- Bon Jovi

Post your mix!! :luck:

Man I got to the bottom and was like "No livin on a prayer?" and then finally, in last place, Jovi. Good choice.

Last year, after I got rejected from NC State, I was driving home and drove past the vet school. Jordin Sparks' "One Step at a Time" came on. I don't usually like that kind of music (actually, that's a blatant lie...I just don't readily admit to liking it, haha) and I legit cried. While driving down the interstate. I really wanted to go to Penn, but I felt like my home state, that I've given so much love to, had let me down. As stupid as this sounds, I sort of felt betrayed.

Anyway, the song sort of cheered me up while also making me cry. For some bizarre reason. It's a good self-confidence song, but it really only has that effect if you can really blast it and sing along. It really accurately summarized the application process for me..."Hurry up, and wait..."

Tom Petty, Bon Jovi, and The Beatles? I like your style!

You need some Bruce Springsteen😉

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line. Honey, I'm still free - take a chance on me!

Sounds like a waitlister sort of song in this context. 🙂 Love ABBA!

Hehe, I'm glad you guys like it!

Any recommendations from the Boss, Jersey Girl?

Also, twelvetigers, when I got waitlisted at MSU last year, Take a Change on Me was totally my go-to song.. but it's still nice and hopeful and fun!

The Streets of Philadelphia is a good one if you're aiming for Penn. 😉 I listened to it a ton this summer! Born to Run is a classic good mood song. I saw him a few weeks ago at MSG - It was life changing.

Sitting, waiting, wishing- jack johnson

ABBA = amazing, I even went through an embarrassing A-Teens phase. You know you know who they are

My current favorite preparation song would be Poison by Bel Biv Devoe (?). More importantly, I do this dance:

Bwahahahaha, Tpad, can you please do that dance tomorrow after the histo practical? I have a feeling I'm going to need a reason to smile!

Oh man, I remember the ATeens..

Poison is so good! "Never trust a big butt and a smile!"

Also, I just remembered "Go the Distance" from Hercules. That is a good one! I also added Born to Run and Born in the USA. 🙂

You were there!?! Which night?! I went for Wild & Innocent. NYC Serenade... wow wow wow!

Agreed, Born to Run is classic.

Sophie- others to consider if you'd like to build a Bruce collection, not all his "classics" but great music still

All or Nothin' at all
cadillac ranch - fun song!
Countin' on a Miracle -my theme this year lol
Good Eye
Johnny 99 - he has a couple of cool versions of this
Raise Your Hand- the one he plays when everyone is exhausted after 3 hours
Seeds- raises your blood pressure, P-Oed song
Streets of Fire -moody
The Rising
This Hard Land
Thunder Road
Working On a Dream - we all are
Youngstown - theres an AWESOME live MSG recording of this

There you have it, Bruce Springsteen 101 😀

Alright! I'll start working on my Bruce collection.

My current "get psyched" mix that I listen to before exams/interviews/etc is:

- Don't Stop Believin'- Journey
- Castles Made of Sand- Jimi Hendrix
- Ebolarama- Every Time I Die
- I'm Sorry I'm Leaving- Saves the Day
- Miranda that ghost just isn't holy anymore- The Mars Volta
- Nerdy- Poison The Well
and last but MOST CERTAINLY not least...
- Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen

That's probably what I'll use if I get an interview

The Wrestler is also a good one! Gotta agree w/ HopefulAg. I also dig Jungleland and The River.

JerseyGirl, I was there for The River. I didn't know a single song from the album (except Hungry Heart) and it was still incredible. It sounds super cheesy, but he is such a performer! He sang for 3+ hours without a single break, crowd surfed, danced, etc. I loved it.

Plus, his daughter is a badass rider, and apparently he is quite the supportive horse show dad. Does it get any better than that?

one song right before i walk into admissions office:
The beatles - across the universe
fiona apple does a really good cover of it too

Hey, I hadn't thought of this. Good idea! Here are my first thoughts:

Ready To Run - Dixie Chicks
I Feel Lucky - Mary Chapin Carpenter
Then I Did - Rascal Flatts
I gotta go find these dreams
Was the last thing that I said
And then I did
Tpad, you are now responsible for me losing half an hour watching Scrubs clips on YouTube.

I LOVE your taste in music!! Esp. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers!!! 😎

Why has nobody mentioned Eye of the Tiger? That's the ULTIMATE!

this song snagged me a boyfriend in highschool... maybe it can snag you a spot at vetschool!

love the mixtape idea, i shoulda done that. now that i'm in, i have specific pandora stations that i listen to for each class... like my indie electro danceparty station for physio chem, motown/60's soul for anatomy, etc. how on earth did i exist before pandora? and the itunes store?

uhm, and, if i could dance like turk, my life would be complete. we're all about the bel viv devoe here at davis, too... LOL

Takin Care of Business- Bachman Turner Overdrive

C'mon, no one says it like this. It's TCB-BTO. Like Homer Simpson says "It's BTO. They're Canada's answer to ELP. Their big hit was TCB. That's how we talked in the 70's. We didn't have a moment to spare."

Eye of the Tiger makes me feel more confrontational than I'd like.

Final Countdown is similarly appropriate but just makes me feel too silly. (Arrested Development!!!)

I know you've already got some Glee, but personally Keep Holding On just got me through finals.

Yay Glee!!!!! I was just listening to the boys' mash-up of It's My Life/ Confessions....

I like listening to any songs that will pump me up or make me smile before a big test/interview/scary whatever, but I don't really pay attention to the message. Some favorites:

Enter Sandman-Metallica (Every Hokie's favorite song)
Good Directions-Billy Currington
Amarillo Sky-Jason Aldean
We Shine-Steve Fee
Bye Bye Bye-NSync 🙂

Random, right? But works for me!

Anybody else have two interviews in one weekend??

I'm so nervous that I'll be at Mizzou and say "wow I just love the state of Kansas!" or something stupid like that 🙂

anyway, I am definitely NOT complaining, just curious if it has happened to anyone else??

Sophie 10-fun story, I have many of those songs on my several playlists that have a "pump me up" feel.

fun story #2 "final countdown" was on one of those playlists of mine and came on as I was pulling in to take the GRE.

I title all of my play lists by either "songs good for (insert occasion here [milking, bbq etc]) a feeling (anGRRRy, I need a hug, etc) or by the weather the songs would be right for (it's raining, it's sunny outside, etc)

Here are songs that I haven't seen anyone mention that I love for these "get pumped up" occasions:

Hey Soul Sister (Train)
Time After Time (cover by Quietdrive)
Gives you He// (All-American Rejects)
Bad Touch (The Box Gang)

There are many others as well...

Why has nobody mentioned Eye of the Tiger? That's the ULTIMATE!

at my undergrad school, during finals week, they play Eye of the Tiger every hour, on the hour, in the library lobby. or at least they used to, I stopped studying in the library this year since I got my thesis office.

So glad to hear I'm not the only one who does this. I've been working on my mix for weeks!

I have those two Glee songs, but I also have "Defying Gravity." Gay kid has a stellar voice!

Some others:

Jet - "She's a Genius" (I just pretend they're singing about me 😎)
Gotta have some Queen! "Don't Stop Me Now" and "The Champions"
Cake - "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" and "The Distance"
"D**n it Feels Good to be a Gangster" from Office Space
Mirwais - "Disco Science" from Snatch.
White Zombie - "Ratfinks, Cannibal Girls and Suicide Tanks"
Three Days Grace - "The Good Life"
The Offspring - "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid"
Men at Work - "Break My Stride"
Tesla - "Caught Up in a Dream"
Duran Duran - "Finest Hour"
The Gorillaz - "Feel Good Inc"
Megadeth - "Crush 'Em"
Rob Thomas - "Something to Be"
FrouFrou - "Let Go"
Owl City - "Cave In"
The Presets - "Talk Like That"

and for some reason, "Brand New Day" from the Dr. Horrible soundtrack. "It's a brand new day, and the sun is high, all the birds are singing, cause...you're...gonna let me into vet school, amiright??" 😀

Be careful or I'll switch back to my Dr. Horrible avatar... 🙂 I'm a sucker for men with goggles. *sigh*

(Even if they apparently like boys IRL... unfair much?)

I like 'Down for Whatever' by Ice Cube, also Office Space. And that Gorillaz song always makes me wanna dance... like a white girl... but still. It counts.

Also, I <3 The Presets!

That's kind of hilarious...in a very strange way. And I thought my school was weird 😛

Causticus, you are so on the money with Queen and Damn it Feels Good to Be a Gangsta!

Also, as Ohio and worse, future OSU girls, we should both have Hang on Sloopy on our lists!

👍 I would listen to this soundtrack before every exam last year. It somehow just makes you happy and gets you pumped, all at the same time!

How was nobody mentioned the firefly song? Its silly but I can't help but sing-a-long and smile.
