is this okay for an interview? the pants and blazer are both black; white dress shirt under; black pumps under

1) the dress shirt is like a tank top - I doubt I'd have to take off my blazer in the interview so is this okay?
2) the pants are little long so I rolled them up - does anyone have any suggestions for how to do a quick hemming so they stay (ex. tape, etc...)

I am a guy, but I have seen most girls wear something like this during an interview. As long as it is business professional, they do not care about your outfit. Less is more for interviews.

Just gonna throw out that it doesn't have to be black (IMO it shouldn't be but that's a can of worms).

does it look bad if it is? not really sure what the etiquette is for interviews

It doesn't, I just think they're too funereal for daytime wear and sort of unremarkable given what you typically see at med school interviews. It feels good to stand out.

Get the pants hemmed! You don't want to risk looking sloppy. I bought a navy suit from Calvin Klein on Macys.com. If you haven't bought this suit I would recommend going there and seeing if you like any of their navy/charcoal suits. Like others have said charcoal or navy is preferred but many people do wear black.

Edit: Honestly though, most navy women's suit that I tried were nearly black (I would say a shade lighter than black). If you go with black you're completely fine IMO. Look at the Interview Attire thread for women here on SDN. Lots of good advice on there for makeup/hair/shoes/etc.

You said "pants and blazer" -- You should wear a suit, not separates. Meaning the slacks and jacket NEED to be of the same fabric for that look to fly. Not ALMOST the same fabric -- exactly the same.

A sleeveless shell is great; tank top is not. The difference is the width of the shoulder and the depth of the arm openings. If you could call it a 'tank' with a straight face, then don't. Also the fabric -- dressy.

Black is fine for women, sub-optimal for men.

And yes to having the pants professionally hemmed.

There's a whole thread on women's interview attire that you should search out -- worth the read.

I wore a skirt suit for my interviews just to avoid having to worry about anything being hemmed. I had a sleeveless shell under my jacket. The suit was black and it worked out fine. Turns out I cannot survive in heels so i had to rework footwear after interview 2.

There is hem tape you can buy at joann fabrics, michaels, maybe Walmart where you can tape you hemline if you are in a pinch

Any dry cleaner store has a seamstress - get them hemmed for $10 or so

Like many people have mentioned, get the pants hemmed if they’re too long. If you go to a local dry cleaners (think family owned) they can usually do it for you for under $10.

The top of fine but make sure it’s a fancier fabric. Sleeveless is acceptable but if it’s a tank top, sometimes the straps can move around - you don’t want your bra strap to show. Also, black is fine. I know people say it’s too funeral-ish but I worked in hospital admin and everyone wears black. If you want to add some color, your shirt can be a place to do it without looking too casual.
