The title says it all; i think every student from a caribbean med school will get asked this question and i am wondering what any creative/useful answers are out there. Everyone has a different reason and I dont feel like saying I wasnt good enough for a US med school. Well to be honest I wasnt at the time of application but I am willing to put my CV up versus anyone else after bustin my tail but I still feel a better, more eloquent answer is out there.....

so help a brotha out!!

There are only 2 reasons 99.9% of people go to a Caribbean school.

1.) Couldn't get into a US allo/osteo school
2.) May have been able to get into an osteo school, but are egotistical and obsessed with MD after their name.

Do people really ask you this question?

It would not occur to me to ask because frankly, I'd assume I already know the answer.

Ditto. Anyone who is audacious enough to ask this question is on par with the dolt who asks a fatty if they are pregnant.

hilarious answers but seriously this question gets asked to almost everyone on almost every interview they go on (from what i've been told by over 50 people i've spoken to)
and i know we all know the answer....but i think they want to hear it put differently so it doesnt sound as bad.....any one here use a good line they want to share?

idiotic question gets an idiotic answer:

I would say that I enjoy the warm weather.

This is just my personal style but I just tell the straight truth. I was just accepted into a very strong cardiology fellowship- during my interview I was asked, "What are you looking for in a cardiology program?"

Most applicants say something along the lines of "a well rounded academic program, strong faculty, opportunity for research, blah blah..." and I'm sure the interviewers hear it over and over again.

I said, "Frankly, a letter of acceptance." We had a good laugh, and everyone knows it super competetive so why bull****? If I were in your shoes, I would tell the truth (but don't be overly negative) and then tell them why I have improved so much since then.

I would assume the "right" answer is that you concede you were young and unfocused during your college years, but then spend the bulk of your answer talking about how the last few years have been a great learning experience and an opportunity to improve and better yourself, and just the kind of "kick in the pants" you needed to prepare yourself for being a good doctor.

Saad,

just tell'm the truth man. you left the country cause your uncle thought you should lay low for a couple years...

you've got great scores, LOR's, and an average max bench press. don't sweat it.

besides residency PD's have their 3rd open to bull****, and bears smell menstruation.

Interview Question - why did you go to the carib?

Go to your schools web site and read what is says. Then just regurgitate the best parts for your interviewer.
