I am thinking of shaving my head in the next few weeks. I have never been bald before so I am not sure how it will look. I am 24 and since I was 18 I have been loosing my hair; I have had a receding hairline with many grey hairs coming in. This past few months I have noticed more hair loss and its now time.

This has been something long in coming and I brought it up to my parents today. They are totally against it and said to wait until after my interviews because they say "bald=skinhead=not getting into vet school." I personally dont think so; I think they are concerned because they are not sure how I will look as I have never been bald. I am a bit nervous myself but I know I will be bald most of my life so why not see how it looks.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Go for it! You're hair will grow back a little bit by interview time - and you might as well.

I can't imagine having short hair or being bald will affect your chances of getting into vet school.

My bro had to do this. He shaves it frequently, while leaving a little bit of hair. Having a little bit of hair there negates the whole "skinhead vibe" (which I think is a stupid association) while hiding his hairline.

I think you'll be okay. Dress and act professionally. Cover up your tattoos and don't bring your nazi memorabilia into the room.

KIDDING. I am so kidding... Please no one yell at me...

go for it!

It seems like it will help your confidence too 😀

Shave your head and wear a star of David necklace to counter-act the potential 'skin-head' look.

There's a guy in my class that did this...and he got in! Actually he's on SDN so maybe he will chime in 😉

I have never thought "skinhead" when I see a shaved-head man. I say go ahead. Nobody will or should judge you on your hairstyle 🙂

I'd say go for it. My husband finally shaved his head (totally bald on top at 20), and actually found that it made a better impression on people than all of the little whispy stuff. I'd do it a few weeks ahead of time though, it gives you time to get used to it, and if you don't like the way it looks you can let it grow back in until you figure out what length you do like it.

I forgot to add: beware the razor burn.

If you are going to do it, do it now so you are use to it, don't have razor burn, know how much time it'll take to maintain, etc.

My husband shaves daily. He is one of those guys that has a 5 o'clock shadow, but has extreme male pattern balding, so it looks like he has a ring of hair just above his ears if he grows it out. He started shaving in his early 20's. It made him actually look older than, but now it actually makes him look younger.

Three guys in our class are either completly shaved or buzz cut. We don't do interviews, but they aren't treated any differently than the guys with heads of hair. We do not have any long haired guys in our class, but there are a few around the school.

Just a caution; buy a hat now (or a few.) Bald heads get burnt from sun and wind. Also, if you are fairly tanned, it could look kind of odd, because your scalp may be pale comparatively. Also, do realize it could require more maintenance than you expect. Some folks can get away with shaving 1-2x a week, others it requires daily maintenance.
