Hey guys I wanted opinion from the guys that have been on the interview trail for residency.
Just based on other ppl you have been interviewing with do you think the suit I am wearing is too blue?
I asked for Navy blue, but I think the suit ended up being just "Blue"

You look like a flight attendant.

What do you mean you "asked for" navy?

The bottom button is not buttoned when i'm interviewing. Lets talk about the blue

The blue looks great. Good luck with interviews.

Are those really the same suit? I don't see a breast pocket in the first pic. Also the lapel looks pretty different.

good question one is taken with front cam and the other taken with selfie cam, so the breast pocket is reversed

At least its not like the funeral procession of overrated black suits that seem to be the norm for each wave of med school applicants 👍

Bro my brain. Can't handle the science.

Anyway, as an M3 I have no personal experience, but I've seen a few groups of interviewing M4s come through the hospital and one or two have had a blue-blue suit. To me it doesn't stand out any more than a straight black suit. I prefer charcoal or navy, but black suits and blue suits work too.

First pic - good color/fit
Second pic - cheap looking color.
On the bright side, it looks better on you than on the model.

Are people just scared to look different so they conform to the standard or is there an unwritten rule that it's in your best interest to where black suit white shirt for interviews? It's crazy to me seeing 4th years walk through now and they're all wearing the exact same thing.

Take two of these, stats:

for the love of god, please don't wear a black suit...

FYI - being thru several interview seasons as a resident, nearly all people wear black.. i'm not sure why. I wore gray when i was a student, and i even had an interviewer say verbatim "thank you for not wearing black". just an FYI... but it gets old fast when everyone is wearing the same color all the time every year

blue is fine; as long as it is not too brown you will be fine!

I have a dark grey I have been using mostly. Also have a black with white thread in it so it does not look like a death suit. I also had in a colorful shirt with the black usually to make it not so bad. I have done the black suit and white shirt on 1 interview but I did wear a colorful tie.

People overestimate the formality of black suits. There is a reason why one sees non-tuxedo black suits on the websites and in the stores of every designer brand. Believe it or not, these suits are not being sold exclusively for funerals!

For what it's worth, I don't even own a black suit.

You're wrong, but it's okay.

Just because they're sold in that venue doesn't mean you should wear them incorrectly.

Fortunately, we have on this site members with consummate fashion sense. I suggest that you provide feedback to everyone from Brooks Brothers to Zara on how they are disobeying the rules of fashion by daring to model black suits paired with clothes and accessories that are completely inappropriate for funerals.

Really? Is this specialty (or regionally) dependent? Because I'm on the trail right now, I think there is maybe 1 black suit per interview group I've been in.

They're trying to sell you something. Doesn't matter.

Black suits are for funerals because there is ALWAYS something better you can wear if you don't have to go to one.

Streetwear is an exception, but if you give a crap about menswear, the above is true. If you legit don't care about how you look and just want a suit, then do whatever you want.

You're free to choose to be wrong. Black suits are never the best choice, except for funerals.

Hard to tell how blue a suit is since it depends on the lighting. Bottom button of jacket is classically not buttoned.

And this. If either of those pictures is representative of how it appears in person in natural light, it's a fine shade

Correct; a great black suit is awesome for a night out. The reason they're on display is because black has two purposes:

- Fashion
- Funerals

A residency interview is neither.

Probably the only suit less fashionable than a black one is a brown one.

I've seen 5 or 6 residency interview groups around our hospital this month, and about 80% have been wearing black suits.

Just because people do bad/incorrect things doesn't mean it's right.

Look no one is saying you won't get a spot if you wear a black suit, but if the alternative is to spend money on something more versatile and suited to the range of events that one may be invited to, then why not?

A navy blue suit will be fine for: interviews, weddings, etc.

The black suit at a funeral bit is often reserved for the wedding party, i.e. those that are close family and friends and actually in mourning vs those there to show support..

I've heard the above debated a bit, but as long as you're not showing up wearing something like a seersucker suit then no one's going to be annoyed at you.

The blue suit looks just fine. A guy in one of my interview groups was wearing a cream-colored suit, and I really remember it. I don't remember anyone else's suit.

Fashion editorial =/ professional or what one wears IRL.

This is true as far as it goes, but black can most certainly be worn "IRL" in non-funeral and informal settings (this works best in bold, form-fitting cuts). I happen to not like wearing black very much, as blue goes far better with my coloring, but people with certain skin and hair colors do look better in black than in blue. Of course, gray is a better and more interesting option for these people.
