I thought it would be useful to start a thread for interview tips. If you have interviewed at any program and could give info about the interview process, structure, stress level....or any other tips (ie people to watch out for) that would be helpful. Sooo anyone got info on St Lukes (NY) and UCLA-Harbor?

Good Luck:clap:

I don't have specific information for those particular programs. IN GENERAL: show that you're enthusiastic and that you're a normal person. Programs would like to see someone who can be confident but not arrogant, enthusiastic without being a "gunner", and someone whose personality is such that they can be a team player with their groups of residents and faculty.

Most programs aren't out to pimp you..they just want to get a feel for your personality and who you are. Try to let them see that side of yourself that isn't necessarily evident on paper.

WARNING: for the women interviewing....despite the fact that it's illegal to ask about family plans or marriage plans....almost every program I interviewed with asked something to that effect. Be prepared to deal with that situation and decide how you are going to respond ahead of time. You can be honest and answer it....you can gently try to let them know that question is an illegal one, but you may put someone off....just don't get flustered and know how you're going to smoothly get out of the situation without offending the interviewer.

Overall, be enthusiastic about anesthesia. They want to be sure this is the field for you too. They don't want to give a spot to someone who seems apathetic about the specialty. Good luck!

Residents : What questions were you asked on interviews?? Please list any that you can remember and what program. Also if you could please describe your interiew day. This would greatly help those of us interviewing this year Thanks

Ah, the interview process. Well, in general, you get there sometime in the AM. Some programs have you come in really early to go to the pre-OR conference, if they have one. Some have you change into scrubs, walk around the OR's and into rooms for a few minutes at a time, and you take turns on interviewing during that time. Other programs skip this and just keep you in your suit and interview turn by turn. My advice is to try to see the OR's because this will give you a chance to talk to more residents.

Interview questions - only one program pimped me. One of my interviewers at UPenn asked me to devise an anesthestic plan for a straightforward case. Then he asked me about various scenarios and what I would do. Basic stuff, but the fact that they pimped me led me to rank this program lower than I would have.

Most of the questions will be expected: Why are you interested in anesthesia? What do you like to do for fun? What questions do you have about our program? What do you look for in an anesthesia residency? Do you plan to do a fellowship? What exposure have you had to the field? Why are you interested in this part of the country? The only way to prepare is to read up on the program, have some questions ready, get good sleep, and don't make a fool of yourself.

Most of the interviews were good - they just want to see if you can have a conversation and that you are normal. Some questions I got that were unexpected were: What was the last non-medical book you read? If the rank lists were due today, our program excluded, what would you rank #1 and why? How do you feel about not having long-term patient followup?

If they offer dinner, eat and drink a lot and enjoy! It's free.

Anyone have any insight on the interview day at Loma Linda and/or USC?

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but in regards to USC this is what was sent.

You will first meet at 8:00 am at the Edmondson Faculty Center for a
continental breakfast and briefing by our Chairman and Program
Director. Attached are directions including where to park. If you have
any problems or are delayed you can call me on my cell phone at
818-720-4138. Let me know where you will be coming from and I will let
you know how much time to give yourself to get here.

After this briefing you will be given a tour of our facilities by one of
our chief residents and another resident. You will tour University
Hospital (core and advanced rotations), Doheny Hospital (ambulatory care
rotation) and Norris Cancer Hospital (Critical Care Medicine and
Oncologic Anesthesia). You will also taken to Women's and Children's
hospital to see our OB and Peds facilities. After these you will be
brought to Los Angeles County hospital for your interviews and lunch.
LA County hospital is where you will spend most of your first year, do
part of your core rotations and spend part of your final year.

Dr. Lumb and 1-2 other faculty will interview you. You will also be
able to spend time with residents (no faculty present) where you can ask
questions about the program.

Your interview day should be complete by around 3 pm.

Thanks Huk
