Hi all. I would appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice on a personal level.

I've been offered a chance to interview at Wisconsin on the weekend of my best friend's wedding. I'm the best man. Full disclosure: if I do the interview, I will make it to the ceremony, but won't be there for the other stuff, i.e. the bachelor party I'm throwing, the rehearsal dinner. I know Wisconsin has one last interview weekend in February, but that wasn't mentioned in my invitation email. Do you think it would be unprofessional to reschedule because of this? Does anyone know if it is harder to get into Wisconsin with a later interview?

Thanks in advance.

talk about a misleading name! EpiGirl is a guy?

Just be honest in the email - explain the situation ... either they'll say NO in which case you'll have to decide which is more important or they'll be flexible - my money is on the later

Have you already confirmed the date? Or did you just get the invite and haven't responded yet. If you just got the invite, I know that they will reschedule you - I had NO PROBLEM rescheduling my interview from Nov --> Jan. Also, I don't really think you need to disclose the reason- just say you have a conflict with that date and ask if there is any chance to reschedule.

I missed a close friend's wedding for my interview here. We're still close friends. If I'd gotten in and turned down the school I missed his wedding for, things would not be so copacetic.

By Wisconsin, I'm assuming you mean UW... Just e-mail Paul and explain the situation. I don't think it's unprofessional at all -- being best man in a friend's wedding is one of these "major life events" that is reasonable to try to work around. And, no, it is not harder to get in with a later interview.

Thanks, everyone I appreciate the feedback. I just emailed with the truth.

Two bits of disambiguation:

LOL, I am a girl. My friend's a dude, hence I am Best (wo)Man. In retrospect, EpiGirl was not a great choice of handle anyway...

I did mean University of Wisconsin. I'm on the West Coast where UW means University of Washington...so confusing!
