I was wondering how many people have had great interviews, and then ended up getting rejected. It seems like these things are pretty hit and miss....

yes they are... there's two things i will never understand in life: the medical school acceptance criteria and women... in that order.

how about the existence of god?

probably got a better chance of figuring that one out.

Out of 3 interviews so far, I got accepted at the one I thought went poorly and put on hold at the 2 that I thought went really well. Go figure. Makes me wonder how much the interview really counts?

Apparently UVM is famous for this--the awesome interview + rejection combo. I don't know firsthand. Maybe someone who's interviewed there can confirm/deny this rumor.

I thought I had a great interview at OSU, then was waitlisted. Just had another great interview at U. of Mich. and I really hope my luck doesn't continue, but I won't be surprised if it does. In the end a waitlist is better than a rejection, but I thought I was special.🙁

Does anyone know how much does the interview really count for? Are there ever people who are basically accepted even before they attend the interview?

I thought three of my interviews went really well and my interviewers even gave me some really great compliments at the end. And yup, i'm now on hold at all three of those.

How do interviews work? Are u given a score or something afterwards? I seems almost unfair to put so much emphasis on interviews, a person with not so great grades could be having a good day that day and have a good interview, while a person with really good grades can have the opposite.

interesting...none of the med students i talked to told me about this...all of them seemed to have awesome interviews with their interviewers when they were telling me about them.

the guy that interviewed me used to be an iron worker. now hes an er doc. how freaking cool is that. he was awesome. interview went awesome. now the only question is whether or not my numbers will force them to waitlist me or take the chance and give me an acceptance.

Well, a great interview should never hurt your application. However, many different scenarios may arise after you leave the interview with that glowing feeling...

Scenario A: Your interview went well, and your interviewer recommended your admission. The rest of the adcom agreed.

Scenario B: Your interview went well, and your interviewer recommended your admission. The rest of the adcom thought otherwise.

Scenario C: You thought your interview went well, but your interviewer disliked you and gave you a negative recommendation. The adcom agreed.

Scenario D: You thought your interview went well, but your interviewer disliked you and gave you a negative recommendation. The adcom told your interviewer to sod off, and accepted you anyway.

Hopefully the all of y'all will end up with Scenario A. I just like to kick back and let chaos theory decide my fate. 🙂

Best of luck,

TF

i haven't applied to med school yet, but when i went for an interview for undergrad (btw, they didn't even tell me i needed an interview, i called to make an appointment to tour the campus, and than they said i need to interview), my interviewer said that i had a great interview, she looked foward to seeing me in the school next year. a few weeks later, i get a letter from them. waitlisted. i was so pissed, she told me i was gonna get accepted!! she even told me dad! when i went for an interview at a different school, they were already talking about giving me scholarship money, and then they gave me my package, and it was more than what they originally said. why can't the other school run like that? i really wanted to go there too.

There are so many of us applicants with similar credentials and qualification, this could be just another way to weed people out.

Applicant A: good academic record, ECs, LORs, great interview

vs.

Applicant B: good academic record, EC's, LORs, mediocre interview

who should they accept? I think some of the schools I applied to were more interested in the candidates as people, but who knows. In the end a lot of them just rate us with a number, and that is our fate. If it's high enough, they'll offer us acceptance, if not, they won't.

What about this scenario:

applicant a: good academic record, ECs, LOR, mediocre interview

applicant b: mediocre academic record, ECs, LOR, and good interview

Which one do u think would be accepted?

definetly appliant b

I think that interviews are more important than your numbers once (ofcourse..) you get one!

Thats so unfair though. You work so hard for 4 years and it comes down to how u were feeling the day of ur interview.

How about this one:

A: good academic record, great EC, LOR, good interview
B: mediocre aca. rec., mediocre EC, LOR, good interview, father and mother both obtained M.D at school!

Welcome to XYZ (especially ivy) Med School applicant B!

I'm sorry, but the way it more typically works is the following:

90% of the applicants will have interviews in the good to great range. Most schools are not going to nitpick over differences between these applicants. The ones who are in the small minority of mediocre/poor interviews will likely be rejected. The few schools that do use interviews as a big part of the application sometimes go to great lengths to look for nitpicky details or stress the applicants. I think this is silly, and who knows how sociable an applicant is from a 30 minute interview gestalt that easily varies from person to person? There are the occasional people that are psycho or really bad, and that is one of two main reasons why the interview still exists. The other reason of course is to see if you like the school if you do get accepted.

From there it's a matter of deciding based on application and a perceived fit for the school in a closed room. It's unfortunate, but med school committees have to deal with alot of well qualified, highly motivated, and sociable applicants. Because there are so many applicants, it's going to come out looking kind of random because each school is going to perceive applicants somewhat differently. There is also alot to be said for letting a school know that you are their first choice.

Good luck!

I got rejected today from a school I had an o.k. interview with. And my stats aren't that bad. I guess I am just to damn good looking for that school

Good question, why?

hehe... because gibna means cheese in arabic, except it is pronounced jib-neh.

I do love cheese, I know what it meant, my best friends were arabs and they used to call me gibna, so it kind of stuck

haha, then the name is appropriate! Your will now be known to me as the cheese!!

Hey just fYI in Hebrew you say Gvina for cheese, a little close to gibna, many arabic and hebrew words are so similar.

Anyhow, Gibna, what was the school you interviewed in?

Just Curious

I have never heard of UVM being famous for this...I had an awesome interview AND I was accepted. I also know people in my class that had terrible interviews (at least in their eyes) and were accepted. It swings both ways.

THere is no rhyme or reason to this process...the key is just to stick with it. Some days the rejection letters are flowing through the mail, on others days, it's interviews and acceptances. It's so up and down...but hang in there! If it's meant to be, you'll get the results you want.

Good luck!

I believe the name "Caleb" means dog in arabic, right?

That's what happened to me. Great interview and then 2 months later I got a rejection letter. I didn't even get waitlisted.

This happened to me. I had an interview that lasted an hour at Georgetown and we talked about all kinds of things. It was my best interview of the 8 that I had. After the interview, he even offered to walk me back to the admissions office which was a 10 minute walk. He then started talking about this doctor who used to be a surgeon general and how I should look it up. I thought for sure I was going to get at least a waitlist.

Two months later I got my rejection. The interviewer is just one person and even though he or she may give you an awesome write-up, inevitably the decision lies in the hands of the committee. Nothing is for sure in the application game. You just have to roll the dice and hope you get lucky.

So funny. I was about to ask the same but you beat me to it. However, if you were Egyptian you would call it gib-neh.

😀 That's my big cheesy grin

On topic though, I had one of those great interviews that ended up in a hold. I was so confident after it too. I'm hoping it works out the other way for me too. I had a ho-hum interview that I'm still waiting on.
