My wife has an interview with Southeast anesthesia in Charlotte coming up.
They said that the recruiting process works as follows:

They review CVs

1) First interview at our expense
2) Second interview at their expense and meet group and with a realtor if we'd like

This is the first interview. She's a peds anesthesia fellow here at WashU. Are there things that this group looks for in particular? What kind of questions can she expect? My wife knows of some upperclassman that didn't get the job... How selective are they?

Thanks.

I interviewed for a general job but could not get past being salaried and having a management company make money off my collections. But if you have 2 be in charlotte its worth a look. Great southeastern city.

caligas:

Was the salary they offered competitive? We don't even know what to expect. I'm guessing 250K for a peds fellow? Not sure though.
Was there vacation times involved?
Were they looking for anything in particular?
Did you get offered a second interview and turned them down?

Thanks.

Salary was 280 with no partnership track. Maybe competitive for desirable city like clt but much less than what I make in partnership now. Peds fellowship might increase that number. Vacay was 6 weeks, low for my tastes. They wanted fellowship to work at downtown hospital. They send general guys like me to smaller community hospitals. I was invited for a second but I knew it was not for me and politely declined.

My advice in general is be a little bolder in asking about money, call, vacation when you talk to groups by phone. Just be tactful and sprinkle in some non money related questions. This might save you a lot of time going on interviews at places that you wont like.

As for what they look for, the usual; good training and good personality.

They probably do lots of cool peds stuff @ the downtown location.

That's awesome Caligas. Thanks for the info.

one more question, how long between the initial interview and the second?

Thanks.

I did not hear from them for a while, maybe 6 weeks after the initial interview. But if I had been more interested I would have called soon after the visit.

does anybody know if there is room for negotiating salary/vacation/benefits with these groups or it is usually take it or leave kind of offer ?
Thanks

Like everything else in life, it depends. If they are running really short or you have some special skill they want there probably is some room. If there are lots of desirable candidates and you are the lucky one who got the offer.... Not so much. Also people talk. If they cut a special deal for one, they will likely be pressured to do it agian fo the next candidate. Also it damages morale if Dr. A got X package coming on. But Dr. B got Y package.

If you don't ask, you don't get.

With that in mind, during my interview process it came down to two jobs. I was completely honest with what I was offered at one group over the other. Group 1 was take-it-or-leave-it; Group 2 couldn't do much in the way of increasing vacation time or income, but they offered to cut the 1 year to partnership to 6 months and no buy-in.

If you don't ask, you don't get.

Cali MGMA has peds anesthesiologists making significantly more than 280. Is it advisable to try to negotiate the 75th %ile salary when they start out so low?

Just checked the mgma. Are those numbers accurate?
I asked my wife and she said they seemed kind of high. The ones I checked had 75% tile at almost 700k for peds anesthesia. We only know people in academics and one on a partnership track to compare to.

I'd say no way is 75% 700K for peds anesthesia. The vast majority of peds anesthesia is in academic centers and they don't pay squat. Private practice? Unlikely to be raking it in. Peds has an insanely high percentage of patients on medicaid so there is no money in pediatric cases. Can't imagine a group paying that high of a premium for somebody that generates no revenue.
