does this sound weird to anyone but me...

i got an interview at a school - for md and mstp - before my file was complete...they had two letters of rec but the one from my research mentor had not gotten there yet.

??

don't get me wrong, i'm stoked but i'm wondering if these schools care at all that we're busting our nuts to get the dang letters in the first place?!

how important generally do you guys think the letters are? do you think there are some schools that only read them when the rest of the app is lacking?

Letters of rec ARE important.

Pitt interviewed me before they had my secondary or rec letters.

It does NOT mean they don't care about my rec letters/secondary (Pitt happens to care a lot about the secondary, i've heard). It just means they really like you (or, in my case, pitt liked me). So, the want to interview you, to make sure you are interested in them. Once they receive the rec letters, they will put a deal of weight to it.

I've heard from countless sources.

I've heard from many sources that # 1 importance are GPA/MCAT and # 2 is rec letters. (Please do not start a debate on whether schools make descisions only on gpa, or whether GPA is the ultimatum...)

Ditto...Pitt did the same with me. It means that you're a very competitive applicant for this particular school. They will read your letters and secondary when you submit them, and they'll go through the post-interview selection process as if you were anyone else. The only difference is the timing of your interview (pre- or post-secondary).
