So when I interviewed, my interviewer talked about how this year they "interviewed so many qualified applicants earlier than previous years." I think he meant it in a general way like the school is becoming more popular, but it feels ****ty because he's saying there are less spots so don't feel bad if you don't get accepted. I feel the interview is where you try to stand out, but by saying that I feel like it doesn't matter how I interviewed because the process is out of my hands

First word of advice is relax, its over and there is nothing you can change about your interview. Now it is time to learn from that moment and give it your best on the next interview.

All faculty love to brag about their schools, my faculty are doing that even now. Don't dwell on the past, focus on the present and the future. You got this!

^ What he said.

It sucks when you feel like you underperformed, but your interviewer is dead right. You have to stand out from the hundreds of people that get interviews with whatever makes you likeable as a person, and convince THEM that you'd be great for this school. It gets easier after the second or third interview. If it's any consolation, getting early interviews (as in before Thanksgiving) is a good sign, and probably means that you will get more. Use what you learned from this interview for the next one.

Don't give up!

When I interviewed at school X, my interviewer asked if I applied to school Y (not my state school, just another rando DO school across the country) and it was the most awkward question ever... I was like.... yyyess?.... and he said oh cool, I used to work there. And that was it.

It came out of nowhere. It was as if, he used to work at school Y, saw that I got an interview at school Y, and then switched to school X and was seeing if I was a liar.

Or he was just curious because he used to work there and figured you'd probably get an II. Not everything they say has to have some hidden agenda.

Very true. But when I was interviewing, those were my initial thoughts haha.

Oh, I'd probably be thinking that too in the moment. It's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking everything has a right answer and forget that they're just people.

Actual photo of me after he asked me that question:

Don't sweat it. If I had a dollar for every time an interviewer said something that made me nervous about my chances during an interview, I could have at least paid for one of my secondaries with my worry-dollars. You probably did fine and the person was just making conversation or something. 🙂

Thanks, this is my local, public school so I really would like to get into this school...fingers crossed this week!

Nothing to do about it now, but I know how you feel. Last week at an interview the faculty member looked down at my application *made this face of vile disgust* and then asked how I was going to handle med school since my GPA was "not very good". I played it off, but I was dying to say "well according to your schools website my GPA exceeds your average".

"The same way the other >50% of your students with GPA's worse than mine succeed in medical school, sir/ma'am."

Then provide him with an ice pack that you carry handy (as we all do), and tell him to apply the cool compress to whatever area feels most burned.

Alas at the end of the day twas I that was burned. Out 500 bucks for an interview I attended after having an acceptance in hand. I liked the school going in, but they wont be seeing me again.

Your better off. My MCAT and GPA were slightly below the average of my school. I initially started med school at the middle of the pack. Now I am in the top 1/4 of our current block. Don't let the nay sayers get to you.

Dudeee you need to chillax. I saw your post in the school specific thread where you asked about calling to express your interest (1 week!!!) after your interview. That is definitely frowned upon and you just need to let the process take its course.
