interviewing for the second year in a row at the same school

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What do you think about one's chances of acceptance the second time around (assuming straight rejection the first time)?

Do you want to know that chance as a fraction, ratio, or odds? To what decimal place?

Well, I am wondering if receiving an interview invite 2 years in a row to the same place is common or not (how many other people have been/are in this situation), and if other people have had success (or not) the second time around. I am looking for anecdotal evidence.

well I interviewed last year at uic and this year and my first interview this year was with the exact guy I had last year. I almost freaked out when I saw his name on my interview sheet but calmed myself and when I had my interview it went well. I had success at this year at the only two schools I interviewed at last year. if that helps answer you questions.

I'm gunning for a second interview invite next year from a school I got rejected from this cycle, so I'm curious as well.

The way I see it (IMO) is that submitting the same application two years in a row would probably not get you very far. The committees want to see improvement. So, I guess if you've received that second interview, you must have done something right during the past year to warrant it.

I'm currently waiting to hear a decision (accepted, rejected, waitlisted) from a school that I interviewed at two years ago. They wait listed me then and I retreated to a Master's in Chemistry position which I should get this May.

I'm just praying they don't wait list me again. That is hell. I would think thats the type of stuff that makes a guy go crazy.

Side note:
Don't these medical schools realize that the type of people applying to medical school are the type of people who planned this stuff out a long time ago, and so having the next year in limbo is Hell for us? I'm not super anal where I have all the papers on my desk in neat rows or anything, but I'm really starting to freak out about not having a job after May, and the thought of applying for a job to start in May and then only having it for the summer seems like something that would annoy anyone who was kind enough to hire me. True, I go into it with the best of intentions, but wouldn't it be the ethical thing to tell them that I might not last the summer because I'm also applying to medical school...but then who would hire me?

I also have a second interview for three schools. I'm guessing that they wouldn't be wasting both of our times if they didn't think that I had improved in some way from last year. But maybe that is just me hoping...

Good luck!!:luck::luck: And thank you for the insight, Playmesomemusic!

Anyone else interviewing for the second time at the same school during this cycle? 🙂

I was waitlisted by my state school last year. will interview in several weeks.

I interviewed at a school I was waitlisted at last year back in december. No word yet.

Maybe we'll open a private practice in the back of a van down by the river.

Hey all-

To the OP, yeah I interviewed at the same school I interviewed with last cycle. Last cycle I actually got flat rejected, no waitlist, no nothing. The only thing I got was a halfway nice letter saying something along the lines of "you didn't totally suck, we just don't have enough seats. Try again 😉" I did try again, ED, interviewed (with different interviewers), but ended up getting accepted this time around =) If you want my opinion, it's a good thing. At the very least it shows the Adcoms that you are determined.

Agree with this. Demonstrating that you went out and tried to beef up your application is the most important thing, and you should expect this to come up in the interview. If you had a low MCAT, they'll expect that you at least tried to improve it. Ditto for community service or clinical exposure.

Your stock will fall if everything looks the same two years in a row.

I would also guess that your best odds of getting in the second time around are best at a state school in which you are a resident since the private schools get such an abundance of applications each year. State institutions definitely want to fill with in-state students since you'd be more likely to practice there when you're done, and your dedication to reapply would symbolize your dedication to the state/school.

Thank you so much for the input, everyone. I think I improved my application significantly in the past year (3 papers that I submitted to journals last year have finally been published, I graduated in the top 10% of my class in my master's degree program (over a 3.9 gpa!), and also got a very good full-time, medically/research related job this year.) However, I tried to retake the MCAT this summer and it got worse (and it was not very good to start with--OUCH!🙁) But I did try and improve it, at least! So, I really hope that this time around I am accepted- thank you for the encouragement!!🙂

And good luck to you too!!:luck:

Bump...🙂

Anyone else got any similar experience to share? Anyone ever been interviewed 2 cycles in a row, and rejected/waitlisted both times?😕
