Interviews, 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone know how many interviews Casey offers per year?

Yep I talked to the rush coordinator too and got the same thing. It's pretty sad.

vandy rejection...not feeling great... :scared:

vandy rejection...not feeling great... :scared:

I got rejected from Northwestern....I would have loved to go there since I have lots of friends and family in Chicago and went to undergrad there....don't let one rejection freak you out! If you applied to 40+ programs as I did, expect to receive a minimum of 30 rejection letters...know what I mean?

:luck:

Be optimistic guys!!!!! No reason to panic just yet! The only time we are allowed to panic is if we don't match come match-day!!!! Deal? 😀

Anyone heard from Colorado? Bascom palmer? UCLA? UCSD? UC Irvine? Duke?

I got 2 emails from Colorado, on the 18th & 26th, both the exact same thing, copied & pasted below:

On behalf of the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology, thank you for applying to the residency program at the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute of the University of Colorado for the class starting July 2008. We’ve received your application packet from the Central Application Service of the San Francisco Match. As you may be aware, they have changed the way they distribute applications this year and it’s taking us longer than we had anticipated to review files. If we feel your file is incomplete or we need any additional information, we will contact you. We hope to make a decision regarding interviews by October 31, 2006 and will notify you at this email address.

For planning purposes, our interviews will be ½ day sessions conducted on Thursday, November 30, Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2. Thank you for your patience.

So guess we should hopefully hear middle of this week.

Has any one heard from emory, unc, or indiana. thanks

I got that same e-mail from colorado too...hopefully soon!

I also got the postcard from UCSD but have not heard back from them since.

Has any one heard from emory, unc, or indiana. thanks

No emory did not even confirm whether they had received my picture or not....Hopefully this week!

I called Indiana in the middle of last week. The coordinator suggested that interview offers will probably be sent out tomorrow.

Scheie/U Penn - phone call 10/29 (batch #1), available dates, 12/1 and 12/8

Interviews at UTSW, UAB, U of Mississippi, U of Arkansas, and MCG.
Rejections from Wilmer and Vande (big bummer)

Has anyone heard from MUSC, UNC, Wake, Duke?

Emory by email 10/30 batch 1 offering 12/2 and 12/3

You have to call to confirm....make sure to sound excited. She kept repeating "Are you excited to come here?" "Are you sure you're excited."

don't worry. i did not sound excited enough either.

4424,

Penn St. sent me a packet in the mail over the weekend. Good luck
Just received an affirmative action statistical form (snail mail) from Penn State, with a note stapled to it that mentions being an "...equal opportunity employer" and ends with "we extend our best wishes to you during this year's match." Is this a polite rejection, or supplemental? Definitely not an invite packet, but a bit strange. Anyone else get this? It's dated Sept 29th!

shalom,

I received the same thing and just called them to ask what it means. The coordinator was gone for the day, but I'll let you know what I hear.

I did get that letter today as well, I was invited for an interview previously though. Prob. just a supplemental.
Also, got Vanderbilt waitlist today, I guess I can't be totally upset about it.

peace

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet. Univ. of Minnesota, by e-mail on Oct. 29. Interview dates are Dec. 8th and 9th.

Emory by email 10/30 batch 1 offering 12/2 and 12/3

You have to call to confirm....make sure to sound excited. She kept repeating "Are you excited to come here?" "Are you sure you're excited."

Terri (the Emory coordinator) is hilarious. She'll totally mess with you. I guess this is her schtick this year. Last year when I called she pretended like she was really confused and that I shouldn't have gotten the invitation. Freaked me out!!

I was wondering if we had all agreed on a date that we should expect most interviews by? 😀

Duke, 10/30 by phone, ivw date 11/17 (only date offered at this point), Batch 1

babyblue is that where you matched?

with regard to hearing about programs I've heard from 15/34, 15 other schools that I've seen posted have already giving out interviews and I didn't hear anything (although I called Northwestern and they said.."as a matter of fact I'm holding your rejection letter in my hand), and I'm waiting on the other 4(Wills, UChicago, Bascom)...so to me it seems the majority have given out there.

i hope it wasn't today... :luck:

Dude, me too!! I got 2 interview offers which I cannot make because the dates didn't work out so I dropped them, so hopefully someone else will get those! :luck:

Please don't double-book guys, please! 😳

I'm still holding out hope that all those top-heavy folks will start discarding interviews at places without big names that I'd like to be....

xaelia...i thought u were one of those top heavy folks! 😀

i talked to a faculty member at Bascom who said that no interview decisions have been made yet.

Anyone heard from Colorado? Bascom palmer? UCLA? UCSD? UC Irvine? Duke?

Based on past experience, it seems that by the end of the 3rd week of November, most interviews will have been handed out. You may still receive one here and there due to cancellations, but these are rare. This is in a normal application year, without any distribution problems. Not sure how things will play out this year. Also, NY programs have traditionally been among the slowest to send invitations.

If it helps anyone, I have heard back from (either interview offers or rejections) from Baylor, MEEI, Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, Utah, Scheie, Vandy, stanford, UCSF, USC, Wash U, Mayo, Iowa, Northwestern.
I didn't find out southwestern had a secondary application until I interviewed at Baylor....So maybe that's why they never got back to me either way....
Anyone heard back from Colorado?

4424 and xaelia have a point...seems like some of us (including me) are worrying more than we need to! azzarah is absolutely a superstar, like many on this board. but let's calm down for the sake of the applicants applying next year: remember, if top-heavies like above are applying to 40+ programs that will drive everyone else to apply, and make the interview process even more random! Just like not double-booking, maybe we can increase the confidence of the next generation--and the chances for interview--by not creating the atmosphere that everyone needs to apply to every program. I think if next years' superstars apply to fewer programs that'll help take some of the perceived pressure off for everyone else to apply to >50 programs. Ophtho applications per person has skyrocketed by 50% when there's been no increase in the number of total applicants (since '99). Currently there's a 85-90% match rate for US seniors.

Just my two cents...spread the love and :luck: to everyone!

not only is azzarah a superstar...she's pretty cute as well!!!😉

Columbia rejection, 10/31 by email (batch #1). Faster than snail mail!

Columbia invite - 11/30, 12/1, 12/2
The email helpfully lists all applicants invited - seem to be interviewing around 60 for 3 spots.

Indiana University invite (email today) - one day with a morning and afternoon session 12/2.

Columbia rejection (twice!), 10/31 email(s)...guess they *really* don't want me!

Hehe, how many did ya apply too? 😉 I applied to that many programs because I switched to ophtho very last minute and did not get to do as much bonding with the ophtho dept at my school....And pretty much no ophtho research whatsoever! I'm going to stay optimistic though! I fell in love with ophtho and couldn't see myself doing anything else! 😍 👍 Chances are, most of us will match this year! Last time I checked >80% of those who go to interviews match! Had I applied to the other specialty I thought I wanted to go into, I would have only applied to 4 or 5 programs....Ok, maybe 10 since that's how many you can do on ERAS for a set price....

Same here with Columbia Rejection x2...Batch 2

Indiana Invite....1 date on 12/2...what are they thinking??!?!?

I heard from Colombia today....Once they confirm, I will give up my Vandy interview, so hopefully someone else will get it....

Also heard from Southwestern today....Invitation for their Dec 1 date which I can not make...Whoever gave that interview up, THANK YOU!!! If they don't give me another date by the end of the day, I will pass the spot on to someone else!

Kulkarka, thanks a lot for the info on BP!!!! I doubt they'll give me an interview (from what I heard last year they didn't interview anyone from my school), but we'll see!

:luck: Everyone!

I know! I hate it when they do that! Both Vandy and Southwestern gave me Dec 1 toobut I have another interview scheduled on that day! 🙄

has anyone else heard from Duke, for any date other than 11/17 ?

azzarah, i decided last minute as well with very little bonding with my ophtho dept. No ophtho research, but did do some in another field. I applied to most of the same programs as you, but am not as successful. I say that because for the many of the programs you listed in your previous post, I have not heard back from, so I'm assuming you are the superstar who would have been safe even if you applied to the 20 top programs. I applied to ~30 myself programs, which was the mean back in 1999 (today is 45). I think you will match where you want, and apparently you are cute 🙂 When the top-heavy candidates are worrying on this board about other top-heavies dropping their interviews (i agree, ppl should drop double-bookings), we are creating the atmosphere that ophtho is more competitive than it might be, at least at the moment. So my point with the post is we should all try our best to not create excess worry for future applicants resulting in >50-60 apps per person when there is no reason to.

Congrats to everyone who have gotten to this point and here's to hoping we'll all do well :luck:

Sinai Hospital this AM by e-mail.
