🙁 Hello all!

i had 15 interviews for FP and am an IMG. my step scores were in the early 80s', one being a second attempt. i'm worrying to death that despite these 15 interviews, my chances for matching are nill.
P.S: last yr i had 5 interviews and didn't match.

should i loose all hope and just jump off a bridge?
plz ........someone...........plz.........show me some light!!!:scared:

Wouldn't you be blue in the face if you jumped of the bridge only to later find out you match... or more likely from the fact that you're drowing because you jumped into a river.

C'mon! Wait till March 15th before such outbursts. You have 15 interviews for FP for gods sakes.

Some light ..... You will match you will match! I think you got much experience from the 5 interviews last year. 15 is very good number👍

cheer up - come on - have you lost your mind? If you jump from a bridge I am not sure you will find your mind - it might not be under the bridge. 😛
Of course you'll match. With 15 interviews you'll do great! Sorry for the disappointment from last year, but in a way that's a good training in perceverence - learn to roll with the punches and to stand up for yourself when you have to. I can not help but wonder - is this the biggest disappointment you've ever got in your life? If answer is yes, than you should count yourself very lucky! Come on - you'll do great - put on your tough skin armor and prepare for a battle of success😉 You'll do great!

ps: and don't forget to send me a message of where you matched:luck:

15 is a lot of interviews. u will match most likely

Now i feel that I wont match with only 8 interviews for IM!!!

Now i feel that I wont match with only 8 interviews for IM!!!

8 only!!!That is scary:laugh: It is not the number of interviews to great extent. But the varieties of programs you interviewed with. If you interviewed with JH, Stanford, Duke, Brigham …. You still have only one interview, from my opinion. The reverse is not true for low tier programs, if you have 3 just multiply that # by 10.

thnx so much guys

i feel better
😳

oh yeah, i'll let u know where i match, if i match

Dude (or Dude-ess),
15 FM interviews? Assuming you didn't interview @ the same program 15 times under differen names, it wouldn't matter if you graduated from Mars State's DO program, you will match.

Of course, everyone knows that Mars State has an MD program that is well regarded for placing people in Ortho, Derm and Integrated Plastics programs. It's U of Venus that has the DO program and they tend to place middle of the pack in FM, Peds and rural community Primary Care IM tracks but rarely go unmatched.

OK, I'm curious. Did you apply for FM last year? Were you unable to get any offers last year during the scramble, or were you just unwilling to go to programs that were available? FM generally has more spots than applicants, so did you have some kind of red flag on you application (felony convictions, multiple failed years, or step exams)? I am just trying to understand how you couldn't even scramble into a spot last year.

How it comes! From 2006 match statistics for FM
Positions offered 2711
US seniors matched 1123 (41.4% of positions)
All others matched 1247 (43.7%)
Unfilled 404 (14.9%) only

Unmatched applicants 6643 (24.9%)

The scramble is much more difficult than the main match for any one.

Unmatched applicants 6643 (24.9%)

The scramble is much more difficult than the main match for any one.

That unmatched number is for all applicants in any specialty, not just those that applied for family med. I was basing my comments on the fact that there has been consistently 200-400 positions for family med unfilled in the match. In the 2005 statistics, there were 2667 total applicants that ranked family medicine programs and there where 2761 positions offered. Only 231 people that ranked family med programs failed to match. I am just pointing out that there must be a reason that there are unfilled spots, but some people are not scrambling into them. The OP is asking for reassurance that may not be warranted if there is some issue with his/her application that should be addressed in order to improve their chances.

here's some math i put into another thread:

Let's say your chance of matching into either one of your time 5 choices is 15% to each program.
Meaning chance of matching to #1 = 15%
#1 or #2 = (1-0.15)^2 = 28%
#1, #2 or #3 = 39%
#1 - #4 = 48%
#1 - #5 = 56%

So the chances of matching into your top 5 isn't 15% x 5, but actually less.

If we use 20% chance of matching then its looks a little better:

#1 = 20%
#1 or #2 - 36%
#1-#3 - 49%
#1-#4 - 59%
#1-#5 - 67%

Then you ask yourself what is the independent probability that I will match at program X. Assuming they haven't offered you a spot and there are not agreements between you or your school and the program or the pd, then this is what you consider
1) How many people do they interview per spot?
-lets say the answer is 10 - then everyone has an equally 10% chance of matching there
2) How many of those students wont rank this program highly or rank it at all and probably wont end up there
-lets say 2/10 - so then our odds edge up to 12.5%
3) Out of those 8 people per spot left how many are "worse candidates" than me in other words where am I on the ladder (based on school name, lors, grades, usmle's, and likeability)?
-I am not sure how to factor this into the equation numerically but you can estimate whether you are competetive to your field and whether the interview likely moved you up or down...

Any way good luck

ok, well last year my interviews were from IM. + i had a sec attempt on step 2 and no u.s exp. and i had applied late. yes, i did scramble, but no use.

this yr i have u.s exp so lets see wat happens

well, so many family prac. programs do not offer pre-matches. So better if u go to nrmp and find out how many positions they are matching for, and find out how many positions they offered as a pre match.

I am applying for internal medicine and out of my 14 programs, 5 programs, they have given almost all seats as a prematch and they have only 1 to 3 positions for match. If I knew this strategy of these programs, I would never interview with this program and waste my money. I guess this will help me for next year as my chances to match this year are fading.

I guess then that my chances of matching are pretty slim as an IMG with 7 interviews, out of which i was only able to attend 5..comes to 5, that is..u were lucky to get 15
with an attempt, u must be having GC...count ur blessings, n pray to God...u'll match definitely..good luck..

Well, I cleared all steps on first attempt.

It is not how many programs u attended, but How many spots they have in their quota on 31st Jan. Even good programs are giving prematches for more than 75% of their positions. So, either u r too good for prematch, otherwise u should have some programs that do not offer prematch at all. Otherwise, u are good for nothing and keep spending thousands for ur residency match.
