Quick question for JPP et al. I'm a CA3 beginning the interview process. I'm looking at primarily academic positions but a few private practice ones. As a financially-strapped resident, I was wondering: Is it customary for the department/group to pay for plane fare or hotel when traveling out of state for an interview? Since this is my first real job ever (not counting food service, etc.), I don't know how it works in the real world. Just wondering how I'm going to budget this year. Thanks!

depends on the groups...and how bad they want to court you.

Mix of nothing at all...to pay for everything.

Yep, I concur with Mil...pays to do alotta hunting on the phone..pick your target areas, call the groups there, talk to more than one anesthesiologist on the group..believe me its hard, almost impossible to get a real feel of group dynamics, stability, whether theyre well liked or hated, by interviewing. Unless you have a buddy or a mole in the group/area, you're taking a chance.
Is the group about to be ousted? Is there money as good as they say it is?

HERES ANOTHER KEY: Talk with more than one surgeon whom the group works with. Corraborate the scenerio from both the anesthesia side and the surgery side. The more complete picture you can paint, the less heartache you are risking by being disappointed with group dynamics/stability/money etc.

Wish someone wouldve told me what I just wrote before I first went into practice.

far away from even considering group stuff ....but to the original poster, how about asking their COMPETITION how the group is? I dont know if there are 'competitive' groups out there, but it seems logical that they will easily point out the 'short comings' of the interested group 😎
