😱 I'm an international student studying pre-med at u of i (illinois) and i recently heard that it is verly unlikely for me to get into med school even with decent grades. This has made me want to reconsider my path. Does anyone know what i should do? BTW does anyone know if the weizmann institute in israel is any good?

There are several international students studying at my school (pre-med). One is Canadian and didn't have any luck getting in this year even with great grades (her MCAT was average). Several have gotten into Caribbean schools. I have heard there are some private medical schools in the US though that DO take international students. Maybe try some of those? Good luck to you!

about going to medical school in your own country?

I am an international student (Philippine citizen). I have studied in LA for the past 6 years, completing both a BS and MS. I will admit it is harder for us in the sense that financial aid is nonexistant, and that we can only apply to roughly half the med schools out there due to citizenship requirements (midwest schools are horrible about this). If you can afford it, apply to George Washington University's International MD program, as it is specifically geared to training international students. I was accepted into this last year, but turned it down when they said I had to pay an additional 60% increase in tuition :scared: . I waited a year, applied again, and am soon heading off to the University of Hawaii for med school, so I guess if I could do it, there's hope for other international students.
P.S. Canada somehow doesn't fall under the same international rules in alot of schools.

I had classmates get into top MD schools that were international. One got into a DO school this past year. Keep up the grades and have a good MCAT score is my best advice. It is possible.

It is feasible but you need stellar grades and MCAT. Ask Calbee (he went to UCLA for undergrad, and now he's heading for med school.) He had 3.9 and 33 MCAT. I think if you have a great MCAT and 3.6+ as an international student, you have a good shot.

Wow...how do you know about my stats? BTW, I got 34 in the MCAT...it was a skewed distribution: 8V 13PS 13BS

So far I'm heading to UCLA for med school, but Columbia is giving me a second interview (for waitlistees), so I hope I'll have some luck there.

what if you didnt do an undergrad in the US? i'm canadian and never did any course work in the us. where are you from calbee?

I believe the general rule is a full year of US coursework must be completed prior to matriculation. Isn't that right people?

I think international students shouldn't automatically assume they won't get into US med schools. My friend is a Thai citizen but got her B.A. from Berkeley. I think she has pretty good GPA (atleast 3.6+) and a 31 MCAT. She got into Einstein and is waitlisted at Upenn and UCSD. I think if you play your cards right, being an international student can set you apart and make you more interesting.

Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina has a large percentage of internationals. As long as you do your undergrad in the US, you are considered a regular applicant there. Good luck, and dont' give up.

SO you were not afraid to apply to UCs? I fell in love with California and would like to stay here but I am not sure if I should apply to public schools

I did my undergrad at UCLA. When I applied, I used Hong Kong as my place of citizenship, but I also hold Australian citizenship as well.

If you were to apply to UC schools as an international student, I'd focus on UCLA. UCSF and UCSD don't seem very receptive to foreign students. UCSD isn't very receptive to out-of-staters either.

I feel for every international applicant. I will be going through everything you are in a few short weeks. Unfortunately I am taking the August MCAT and that puts me at a greater disadvatage. I did my undergrad in Texas so I will keep you updated on my progress.

Ever thoguht about applying for permanent residency? I think that solves the problem. I'm not sure how hard it is to get but thats what I'm doing this year so I am fully able to work here after I finish PA school and be able to apply to med school later without as many problems, I'll get US citizenship rather than go to a Canadian school if thats what it takes. I love Canada but I love the American Education system a bit more.

I am actually having my interview for green card around november. Should I still be applying this june?

For med school? Why not? If you get accepted great! If not then try again with the green card 🙂

I applied to med schools before I got my GC (got it in November last year 😀 )and have been accepted to several schools.
I agree with people who posted before me and said that if you are above average across the board, you'll have a decent chance of getting in somewhere.
I applied to lots of places, got accepted to 3 schools, waitlisted at 2 (incl UCLA).

Wait! How do you go about applying for a green card. You guys make it seem like it is so easy to get. Can you tell me the requirements to apply for one?

Get married! If you already are, divorce and remarry!
