I came across this article on WashPost and curious to know your thoughts:

There doesn't seem to be a clear standard on this but i noticed this part:

"The general consensus is that if someone has itching without a rash in the second or third trimesters that is not explainable by any other issues, [their] bile acids should be sent” for laboratory analysis.

This seems to be another sensationalist article in the lay press about how awful doctors are and how patients always know better than their doctors. The only thing missing is a heroic nurse who saved the patient from the doctor murdering her.

For me this is a total straw man. I have absolutely nothing to do with OB and I learned all about ICP in med school. It's all over the USMLE. Those liver disorders of pregnancy are comically overrepresented on Step 2CK (as is OB/gyn in general).

I diagnosed this on an OB consult as a 3rd year. Itching and/or rash in pregnancy as longhaul said is covered ad nauseam on both the OB shelf and CK. The fact that some OB said it wasn't discussed seems to be off, esp considering they just released a new study showing UDCA is effective for itching, but not necessarily for fetal safety.

You sound like a typical ob/gyn doc
