I was wondering if anyone in med school had time to do intramurals or join a rec league? I want to go to school somewhere I can continue to play hockey (played for 17 years), even it is just for an hour a week. I think it would be a great way to take a break from med school. Also, does anyone find anytime to play golf during med school? Thanks

Most med schools have intramural teams in a handful of sports, and basically since attendance is iregular or spotty, whoever shows up gets to play. I've not seen an intramural hockey team at med school, but you probably could start one easy enough if a league already exists at the school.

What you have time for in med school generally is based on your priorities -- for example, if you want to play a round of golf on a Saturday and then stay in and study on Saturday evening, instead of study during the day and doing something Saturday night, I see no reason you cannot allocate your time that way. Just don't expect to be able to have time for both. The studying generally needs to come first, and you budget what free time you have to the things you find important. You just won't have the kind of free time you did in college that allowed you to do everything you wanted. But if golfing is more important to you than other forms of socializing, then go for it.

Judging from the workout thread, it seems you will be able to find at least an hour a week to play hockey.

My suggestion is to go to the campus rec center when you get to school and ask about intramural sports and how/where to sign up or find the local ice rink.

We had pretty much an all 1st year med student intramural hockey team at my school. It's pretty nuts, but it seemed like every person they admitted needed at least 5 years of hockey as a pre-req.

I'm in my surgery clerkship right now and getting in 27-36 holes a week. If you want to make the best of your summer, you can figure it out. (and managed to get honors on my evals so far)

You'll have plenty of time in the school year to devote 2-3 hours to a sport you really want to take part in. After anatomy finishes, several medical students can easily find 30min-1hr to work out every day.

Besides maybe and exam week here or there, you'll be able to spen a little bit of time each day doing what you want. Whether that be veg out in front of the tv, shoot the sht in the locker room after your hockey game, or work on your bi's and tri's in front of the undergrads, you'll have plenty of time for it. It just takes some time management skills. I took a break after college hockey so now I run during the lunch hour.

Remember, there are people with wives and kids going through med school too. If they can manage that, you can manage squeeking in some ice time. Just try and play a little defense, we goalies hate it when you guys slack off and make us face 20 3-on-1s in a period.

Definitely doable, for me was golf and intramural football first two years (a couple of the guys in my class who played college ball joined up with a city league). People play basketball, tennis, softball, weightlift, we even had a boxing club when I first arrived at school, although it kind of faded away. Couple of folks have a regular poker game as well.

you may be better off getting on an undergrad intramural team as med school participation can get a bit spotty. you absolutely should have time for this.
