I was just wondering what kinds of questions everyone had for their interviewers? I was reading that alot of you guys actually asked your interviewers qeustions, but I dont know what types of questions to ask, if someone could give me a heads up so I know where to start it would bemuch appreciated.

hey there.. i have interviewed @ NECO & SCO...
both interviews consisted of pretty basic questions...NECO was open file; so my interviewer just "dug deeper" --for instance, he asked what activities I did in my extracurricular credentials (i.e. I was fundraiser chair.) He also asked how i compared shadowing an ophthalmologist and an optometrist.. and then it was basically over.. b/c their interview is only like 20 minutes. oh yeah... i asked about their 4th year externships (only b/c details were not clear ..)
SCO: this interview was closed file.. so 1st question was 'tell me about yourself'' so the cliche' advice here is to.. ."KNow yourself" =) My interviewer (Dr. Sanford) graduated from SCO in '03 so she was young/energetic, so it wasnt and old man w/ a beard & glasses drillling me--so this was cool. she basically asked.. why optometry, what class was most challenging to me in undergrad, a lil about shadowing, why not opticianry or ophthalmology (my sis is an optician, my dad is an optometrist & b/c i shadowed an ophth.) sooooo--> all the crap you put on your application--> know. lets seeeeeeeeee.. i loved that she was from TN, b/c i am from SC/NC and it was a relief to have someone who had a southern accent... Just imagine when i opened my mouth in Boston. = D

i think thats a good synopsis of what to expect.. im not emotionally scarred or anything from the experience.. soooooooooooo dont sweat it.. The first thing that Dr. Sanford said (SCO) was the whole point of the interview is to make sure you have social skills.. can you effeciently communicate to patients/staff... you know the deal.

FOR OTHER READERS: Been to NOVA?? clue me in. I'll be there Jan. 9th

P.S. As for questions asked @ SCO.. i asked about scholarships b/c i heard of small ones that individuals classes sponsor (i.e. class of '84) etc.

P.P.S every school is crazy about their clinic so research it and ask about that? i didnt .. but what the hell? haha 😀 😀

First off, you have to think strategically.

If your a genius, a crappy interview isn't going to destroy you.
But if your grades are mediocre than the interview will be the deal breaker. Keep in mind that the questions you ask should be segways to talking about your strengths, and why you are the best candidate.

I really can't stress this enough: TAKE CONTROL.
Keep in mind time restrictions,
You need to come up with a game plan and implement it according to the time allotted, your interview tactics for 20 min, will be different than an interview that is for an hour. A benefit for longer interviews is that they have more of a chance to access your character.

Thus, the questions you pose will be CRITICAL.

But don't worry, I find that you'll come up with questions as they are talking to you.

Best of luck in your interview!
You'll do fine, all the profs are laid back.
ICO loves Canadian Students, I should know, cause I am one!

NOVA's interview was a fairly painless experience. 🙂 The actual interview is a seemingly small part of the day because they do so many other things with you and you will meet many other people besides the interviewers. Both the Dean and Assistant Dean are VERY helpful and easy to talk to.

I believe the interview was "semi-open file". 🙂 While they weren't looking at it while I was in there, they did already know key info from my application. Be prepared to explain anything undesirable about your application and have an idea about any new laws/legislation you may be asked about. It seems everyone's interview questions from my group were completly different, so be ready for anything. They will take a good amount of time with you (seemed to be between 30 and 40 minutes for each one of us). Just know that Fran will be there to be your number one cheerleader if you have any problems or questions! 🙂 Good luck!
