Intro to Bioethics?

I keep hearing this is a class that med schools love to see. Is it true and how important is it that I take this course?

In all likelihood, this will be incorporated into the curriculum of the medical school you attend. I have never seen it mentioned as an impressive course taken as an undergrad. That said, if your undergrad school has a philosophy requirement that can be met by taking bioethics, it might be a reasonable choice to fill your core requirements.

I saw it on UW prereq site as "highly recommended but not necessary" and took that as "this class is 100% necessary" lol. Honestly if you have a tough schedule and want an easy A.. id take that class. It was very easy.. all you do are read a couple articles a week and write a response to all of them as well as memorize some vocab... Easy A. In my experience, i found the class as rather pointless and mostly just common sense. But, why risk not taking the class and looking back after a rejection email and thinking "damn.. if only i had taken bioethics." 😉

I suppose. It also depends on the professor and where the course is taken. Thanks for the advice!

If your Bioethics class was an easy A and common sense, you probably didn't take a very good one.

By "easy A" I mean much less required out of class work and studying than physics, bio courses, chem ect. However, I agree with you. That class was not the greatest in my opinion. I truly feel like all I learned were a couple of useless vocab words and how to write as a bioethicist. One cool thing that I did like is that my professor helped me write a response to an article in the Hasting Center Report and submit it for publishing. All in all, I recommend taking the class since it's listed on the recommended electives at UW. Plus, it's nice reading a book that's not science textbook every once in a while.

I would only take it if you're interested in it. Med schools likely won't care unless you have some other sort of demonstrated interest in medical ethics (in which case it'll be a cool talking point at interviews). It's not worth taking only if you think "med schools might like it".

However, if it's something you're interested in, definitely take it because it's a cool field.

I took it and found it was very helpful in terms of interviews and in general talking more intelligently about medicine in my applications. Far from an easy A, though.
