The question is

Molecules of a sample to be analyzed by a mass spectrometer are ionized in the ion source chamber by collisions with free electrons. When a molecule collides with an electron, at least how many ions are created?
A) 1
C)3

I thought the answer was C. Here's why:

In the passage, it states that the molecules are singly ionized. However, I think of ions as positively and negatively charged particles. So here's what I thought:

molecule + e- --> molecule(+ charge) + 2e-

So, shouldn't there the answer be three ions? Or am I wrong that an electron can count as an ion? Let meknow!
