I cant find a single source that has helped me with this topic so far. It is so confusing to me. I had a couple questions from the practice tests talking about the highest 3rd ionization energy between compounds. Can someone break down this topic for me please? or supply me with a link to a helpful website?

The third ionization energy is the energy required to remove the 3rd electron. If you have an element in Group 2, it is SUPER difficult to remove its 3rd electron because that 3rd electron is in a filled shell. It is much easier to remove the first 2 electrons. This explains why the third ionization energy of say Magnesium is considerably higher than its first or second ionization energy. Hope that helps!

Use Mike's Gen Chem video for this topic. I was also confused about this topic until I watched his video. It helped me a lot and it helps you!
