Anyone have any experience with these? I've always been an Android/PC person, but my school highly recommends we get an iPad of some sort.

I like the portability of the mini, but the iPad4 is more powerful. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm thinking of using it to study Anki flashcards as well.

btw, finally changed my status from pre-med to med. What a glorious feeling 😀

I'm having a similar dilemma, but it's mostly size based rather than precessing power. I think they're both gonna be comparable for our purposes, i.e., the mini should easily be powerful enough. But do I wanna read outlines, etc on the mini verses the regular size screen?

On a side note, I still got about a month before my status change. =/ Kinda glad for the extra time though.

mini fits in white coat pocket. 👍

and i can shove it into small purses. 👍

i have a regular ipad i use to store movies i actually buy not rent, books, music, etc on. for playing around at home and for long flights.

Full sized IPad also fits in my white coat. Guess it depends on the pocket size.

I have a mini and I really enjoy it's portability.

If you are trying to take notes and type on it (with logitech keyboard piece) then the bigger option might be better.

But if you just want to use it for reference / flip through epocrates and other helpful med apps then the mini is really nice.

on a side note HBO Go and Netflix work nicely on the mini 🙂 Girls and Game of Throne marathons to decompress after exams !

One obvious difference is that the mini is so much cheaper.

Does anyone take notes (w/ stylus) on the iPad mini? How efficient is this compared to the full size iPad?

Why not get a big one now, and then two years later get a mini for rotations that is a couple generations beyond anything that exists today.

The ipad mini is the real ipad IMO b/c its lightweight and sturdy whereas the regular ipad can sometimes be cumbersome to use.

I would personally wait for the iPad 5 come September or October. It is supposedly going to be thinner, lighter, and have slimmer bezels. I do like retina displays though.

Yeah. I think waiting is a good idea. You know how Apple is, by the time we graduate there will be an iPad 50.

In the meantime I might just get an Android tablet. I don't want to take notes on it, I prefer pen and paper anyway, I just thought it would be a useful tool for flashcards and such. (unless we can be sure there won't be an iPad mini 2. I really like its size)

this may be somewhere else on sdn, but what about memory size (16, 32, or 64GB)? what would be sufficient for storing lectures and textbooks?

is your school using ios specific apps???

if they don't list a specific reason i would get the nexus 7 over the mini

My wife has an iPad 4 (the retina iPad with new dock connector) and I have the iPad mini. I've used both extensively.

The iPad mini is not currently retina and it is definitely noticeable compared to my retina iPhone and other iPad. However to me that is a minor distraction. The lightness and the smaller size of the mini is great for reducing white coat weight. I only carry my iPad mini, Sanford's and green book.

During my core months of medicine, I was able to do qbank and read my step up to medicine in between rounds and when I got this down to an art, I actually could take the evenings off rather than having to read and study then.

Only other negatives are the typical apple sand boxing of devices, etc.

Btw I use an app called iAnnotate to view my textbooks which allows all sorts of modifications such as highlighting. I then sync it through Dropbox and can view books on any computer

I have a full sized iPad and thought it was great for second year. But now that I am on the wards, I wish I had an ipad mini. The portability and convenience of its size makes it much better for running around a hospital. My iPad 3 does fit in my white coat pocket, but the weightless is noticeable, and sometimes it bangs around while I'm sitting. When they come out with an ipad mini with retina display, I'll probably sell my ipad 3 and "upgrade" to a mini.
