Ipad Dos (2)

I bought an iPad off Craigslist, played with it for a few days, and then promptly resold it. It's a cool toy, but I really couldn't find any use for it that would justify the cost. I'd rather spend the money on something either more functional (a real laptop) or more fun.

They're a good thing to get to know how to use. Some residency programs are now providing them to all new residents and the future of medicine is EMRs and tablet devices to be used in the clinic.

Having said that, my school gave the entire class free iPads. I currently use my iPad mainly to read digital magazines and keep it on top of my toilet. Otherwise, it is nice for surfing news and the internet at lunch. That is about the extent I found it useful for classes and studying for medical school. My laptop trumps it in all regards of functionality.

I have it and personally I find it useful for keeping all the information, notes etc in one place without having to carry my laptop around. It does not replace the laptop entirely, but for me it eliminates a lot of 'what-did-I-do-with-that-piece-of-paper' situations and all my immediate use study material is in one place.

You will enjoy it more if you are a gadget geek. If you don't care that much about tech gadgets then you can draw a lot of arguments against it.

It's not a standalone computer (so you need a desktop or laptop to manage it) and the on screen keyboard is mediocre, but there are a lot of great uses for it. I keep articles on it rather than carting the paper around, as well as lots of ebooks through the Nook application. When I travel I take just the iPad so it takes only the space of a spiral bound notebook and lasts 8-10 hours without another charge. I also watch movies on it through Netflix or offline with an iTunes store rental, have a medical calculator app, have the entire Merck manual, and download maps for wherever I go before I leave so I can access them offline. On away rotations I have found that I don't need anything but the iPad (when was the last time you wrote an essay anyway?). It handles email, music, web browsing, and most other basic computer functions easily.

So in the end if it is either/or for a traditional computer or an iPad, go traditional computer all the way. If you have a computer though the iPad is both a fun toy and really useful, you just need to find what it can do beyond browsing the web.

Oh, and it is apparently possible to fully access the EMR at our hospital with an iPad. I haven't bothered with that but given the scarcity of computers on some floors hopefully you can see how that could be beneficial.

I think the point of his comment was that medicine is moving more towards electronic mediums, and his school thought the students would benefit from learning how to better incorporate such mediums in their daily learning and practice of medicine. poster may not have found good use for it, but that doesnt mean they dont exist, clearly his school believes they would be useful.

bro.
