iPhone 4 & iOS4 JB is out!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hmm, I'm kind of surprised you can talk about this kind of stuff openly on the forums.

On topic though, I have a JB iPhone 3G with some version of OS3 on it. Is it worth switching to OS4? I'm happy with OS3, so if there aren't any major advantages in OS4 I'd rather just keep my current version. I've heard you can get OS4 to multitask in 3G through hacks, but I'm afraid it'll make the phone slower.

Apple frowns on it...and still considers it a violation of their TOS...and it might brick your phone...and it might eff up your warranty. OF course, they are a bunch of totalitarian *******s that can't handle something being out there that doesn't intrinsically line their pockets.

You can type a code into a WebOS device to get into dev mode...and the directions are in the instruction manual rather than a warranty destroying piece of hillbilly-rigged unlicensed software...

....

The day people wake up and realize that Apple is the most abusive tech company on the planet shall be a wonderful day.

Get on it kids...

Hit up iPhonehacks for more info...

Looks like there is a minor issue with MMS and Facetime - shouldn't effect you if you aren't rocking the new iPhone...

one: you use Iphonehacks?????

is that the only hack out for iphone 4 ios4? how about redsn0w? any better hacks out there for the new phone.

it isn't difficult to get rid of the jailbreak so you don't have to take it into apple like that.

Are people whole steal from Apple, download movies and songs illegaly, more likely to steal drugs from the pharmacy? I would say yes. There now it's pharmacy related.

Let's get some facts straight - there is some obvious confusion.

1: Unlocking your phone is LEGAL - period. No confusion whatsoever.

2: Jailbreaking your phone is LEGAL - Period. No confusion there.

3: I utilize SBSettings, backgrounder, categorieSB, Cydia, ProSwitcher, etc... I have the right to purchase and run these apps on my phone - regardless of what apple chooses to make known.

The reason this was upheld in law recently is that no company can dictate this to you.

I do NOT condone the pirating of software - these are two mutually exclusive concepts.

So if I create an app like lexicomp and charge for it on itunes but then a bunch of people are getting it free when they jailbreak their iphone that is not stealing?

Pirating of software is illegal. No one debates that. Unlocking and jailbreaking an iPhone (meaning running apps not signed by apple) is also legal.

You don't outlaw the use of roads because drug traffickers use them to move drugs.

It does void your warranty. So why in God's name would you buy this POS when you can get an Android phone and use what you want? Unless.. Unless.. You are an Apple freak, see the above video....

Because the iphone is awesome, except when you want to make a phone call. I just got back from vegas and I had to switch to Edge to use my phone because the G network was totally useless on the strip, too many users.

Ok but people who pirate software are probably more likely to steal drugs in the pharmacy.

Historically (meaning past 2yrs) - it's because the best apps are made for the iPhone...

This is definitely changing though. The 3GS is a snappy, slick phone to use. I have never seen that in an android phone to date (specifically lag in the interface and web browser).

That being said - phones like the Evo and droid x are really appealing - I am locked in until Christmas - cannot wait to see what is available between win phone 7, faster / more powerful android phones, and iPhone 4.

cannot wait to see what is available between win phone 7

Win phone 7 folded faster than that guy in Times Square selling fake rolexes from a briefcase.

Microsoft is a big, sleepy, lumbering beast that will never again produce anything novel or desirable.

It's a friggin phone for crying out loud. If it can't make calls, what the hell is it good for? All the other crap is secondary. It's a phone. If not it's just a toy. An expensive POS toy, but a toy none the less....

Honestly, I use my phone about 95% of the time for things other than making calls. So, for myself, my phone function is actually secondary to all the other apps. But if it couldn't send texts, then I would agree with you.

I'm slow and behind the times. I still have an iPhone 3G. No problems with it as far as phone calls or texts.

I haven't eve jailbroken it, but I have plenty of friends that have. Never seem to have any issues with it.

And none of them have ever stolen from the pharmacy lol

Person A- steals stuff
Person B- doesn't steal stuff

Who is more likely to steal other stuff?

Yes, it really is that simple...when you're talking about automatons. 🙄

Let's move on.

Person A- steals stuff
Person B- doesn't steal stuff

Who is more likely to steal other stuff?

Person A: Kills animals
Person B: Doesn't kill animals

Who's more likely to commit murder?

Sorry, your argument is specious at best.

i'll disagree here...i rarely use my phone to call, only my parents...even now, my mom is starting to text me.

as for android...didn't the new droid or droid x get bricked when you try to root it? so much for open...having played with both, i'm not a fan of the OS. hardware is comparable, but eh, not a fan (haven't played w/ 2.2 froyo yet).

droid x is too freakin' big, it's the size of my GPS unit in my car...and evo 4g has battery life issues, and WiMax isn't that much faster than HSPA.

anxiously awaiting verizon's LTE options though, iphone 4 is the best thing out there for now, but it's a close race.

You need to spend that to text? My Palm Centro is a texting beast and it's ancient technology. The Iphone is 100000000000000000000% marketing hype. Apple is a turd of a company that treats it's customers like worthless s**ts. They should have just given the bands to everybody as soon as they were aware of the problem. It took the friggin Consumers Union to shame them into doing what they should have done in the first place. If they cared about their customers the way they claim, this would have been a blip on the radar. The mother friggin thing still doesn't have a replaceable battery. Another class action law suit waiting to happen that will get all Iphone users 10 cent certificate at the app store and the lawyers will get millions that could have helped reduce the price of the brick.

Apple makes great products. That's where it ends. The You Tube I posted is true. People believe in Apple like Steve Jobs is Jesus Christ. In reality he's closer to the devil. Apple is bad, bad, bad and I would rather be cell phone free than give that prick a penny of my money.

anyone hear of any bricking while trying to jailbreak? what do you think apple will do to retaliate against those who jailbreak their phones? hopefully not what microsoft did when people modified their xbox 360...

I dunno, 22 days from start to finish for that bumper issue isn't too bad, it took Nintendo longer to address its wrist strap problem (I don't think they ever even acknowledged it). Besides, I never had an issue, maybe I'm just lucky.

I don't think people are tied to apple the way you think they are...hell, i was "tied" to palm/springboard when it was the best thing out there (well, when getting the iPAQ was cost prohibitive). Steve Jobs may be the messiah now but...well, who knows. Steve Case was almost messiah-like when AOL-TW merged, look where that went.

It's all disposable technology....I'm only loyal in 2 year increments with my phone or 4-5 years for my laptop. I don't subscribe to the whole "oooh steve jobs is evil let's all sing kumbaya and relive the 60's and not give money to 'the man'" idea....it's just a freakin' piece of silicon. they're out to make money, i'm out to keep myself entertained. steve jobs could be a convicted rapist (*true* evil), i wouldn't really care.

i've tried the other products (evo, droid, nexus one, BB) and wasn't impressed. in fact, i got the BB (2nd hand, newer model) and used it for a month and hated it. but we'll see in 2 years. why is this so hard to understand for some people?

random thoughts:
replaceable battery is a non-issue...even my old phones w/ replaceable batteries, i never bought an extra one. same with laptops...people raised a stink when apple sealed it in, a) it's easy to replace yourself anyway, b) i've never once bought an extra laptop battery, ever.

couldn't replicate death grip on my phone or the 7 other iphone 4's i got a hold of that were my friends'. media hype, but i'm sure it happened.

**disclosure: i bought AAPL @ $110 and am currently holding.

It was only 22 days because of the stink that was raised. It it wasn't they wouldn't do anything about it except sell you the band for an extra $30.00

We can agree to disagree....

I'm not a go back to the sixties guy at all. I just don't like people like Steve Jobs who piss on me and tell me it's raining,.

I agree the BB bold was a joke. I am going with the Palm Pre Plus and WEB OS and we'll see what happens...

I don't care about the non replaceable battery it;s the $75.00 financial enema they give you if it needs to be replaced.... I would hold if I were you as the masses are asses will continue to buy from this guy....

Jobs is a character, pure and simple. He's more interesting to watch than Steve Ballmer, that's for sure. Though I understand that if I had a death grip problem and Jobs told me it wasn't a problem, I'd be mad too.

BB bold was what I had, but my ex-girlfriends used BB's due to work and while the physical keyboard was outstanding, that's all it was really good for (email, BBM). The apps I use daily/often aren't available for droid either (yet).

I'll side with you on WebOS, I thought Palm was going to die as a company (or their technology purchased/shelved) so I'm actually interested in what HP will be able to do. HP + Palm has the potential to unseat Apple and provide a viable alternative to its products (phone + tablet). If anything, it'll keep Apple on its toes. You'll see lots of leapfrogging over the next few years.

Wait... they charge you to replace the battery?!?! So if the battery wore out in your non-Apple product, the company would just give you a free one? That's so cool!

I've had batteries die in Apple products, as long as the battery (not the rest of the product) is under warranty, which is based on the number of charge cycles, they replace it for free even if the rest of the unit is out of warranty.

I've also replaced iPod batteries with aftermarket parts that I bought for $15, it's not really a big deal. Also, batteries are expensive in general. If I want to buy a replacement battery for my camera, it's like $80. So the $99 that Apple charges to replace the battery isn't really that extreme. Plus, as has been said, you can just buy one and do it yourself. If you have to pay them to replace the battery, then it's already out of warranty anyways.

Do you understand what jailbreaking actually is? Just jailbreaking does not imply installing illegal/pirated software. There are ways to do that but these are two separate issues.

Anyone try that website jailbreak method? I think it's jailbreakme.com? Currently have a 3gs and have been waiting before I put ios4 on it.

The Original I-Pod had a battery soldered on and when it died after the warranty expired, Apple refused to do anything other than sell you a new Ipod. A large Class Action Suit followed. This again only happened because they were publicly embarrassed.

The Original Fee was $255.00 + a mailing fee..... K-Y Jelly anyone....

The original iPhone has a soldered in battery as well... Still, it was pretty easy to replace. You will need the right tools - but they are cheap ebay.

I wouldn't single out Apple for evil practices - Both HP and Dell have had pretty notorious moments of evil corporate actions.

This is a commonality with all tech corporations...

I've heard more horror stories with Dell and HP customer service than Apple. Every PC computer I've had has crapped out on me...and I consider myself a power/custom user who can repair most things. Even Lenovo...two of my classmates with nice Lenovos had their computers crap out mid-semester.

Again, everything Old Timer posts up has never applied to me (bum batteries, death grip, steve jobs peeing on me), maybe I'm just lucky...but the most I shelled out for a replacement battery was $20 for my old click wheel ipod 20GB back from 2005. Even my old iBook G4's (2005) is still on original battery w/ 90mins charge; my current MacBook (2007) is still on original battery with 2.5-3hrs charge.

Just gotta know how to treat Li-Ion batteries...40% optimum charge for storage/non-use, keep it away from 0% and 100% for prolonged periods of time, and calibrate once a month/two months from max charge to zero. This is across all devices.

.

If you do get one, hit me up. I've been tinkering around with mine for over a year. I've got the CPU overclocked and tons of custom software. And you can get into dev mode (aka "jailbreak") without voiding your warranty on Palm phones (they are actually on record as encouraging homebrew software). You just type a code into the phone and it unlocks it. It's in the freaking owner's manual.

Viva, Palm. WebOS blows everything else out of the water. It's just a shame that Palm doesn't have the psychotic supporters nor PR machine everyone else does. Hell, Apple actually almost bought Palm for their OS. It's that intuitive and well written. I really, really hope HP doesn't **** them up. It would be a shame.

Every Windows PC I have had has also never crapped out on me. I still have an IBM PC XT that runs DOS. I did just retire my Acer Power 486 DX2-66 with DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1. I still have my Acer Travelmate Laptop running Windows ME. Anecdotal evidence is as important here as it is in pharmacy.

DELL is clearly in a league with Apple and Tyota for being low life weasels. Apple has a clear pattern. Fudge, deny, obfuscate and the give in after they are publicly embarrassed. You think if Jobes cares about his customers he would cut this **** crap by now.

Also, when not a pharmacist I have PC business. I repair and sell PC's so I have seen a gazillion more PC's than you have and I know which are good and which suck the life out of you. I think Apple PC's are well made. Now that they are just Intel ships and WD hard drives, their only difference is the quality of the case and the OS. You pay a premium for OS X.

Had a friend with a MAC book. Died hard drive. Apple cost to replace $350.00... Go figure....

some friend you are, haha...you repair PC's and didn't offer to spend 15mins replacing the HD with a $100 part?

labor is always the rip off...it's like going to the car dealer, they'll charge you $50 to change your $15 air filter. diff. with apple/tech companies is they don't itemize this. speaking of dealer...i drive a toyota, clearly i don't care about companies obfuscating any flaws, i judge based on what i see out on the road (and i see a LOT of beat up toyotas still running).

just curious, what PC's would you recommend? i've always built my own budget boxes (these have lasted forever) but my laptop purchases seem to have been poor.

HP Business. They come with no bloatware and are built solid. You have to order them direct...and have access to their "EPP service."

I've always had good luck with Dell's Latitude line of laptops.
Besides being slow my D610 is still chugging along after at least 5 years and it traveled everywhere with me.

For PC laptops I'd got with a thinkpad, dell's business line (latitude or whatever they have now), some sony's, or even certain HP's.

My wife got an Acer extensa last year during black Friday and it's an ok laptop, certianly not built as solidly as others I've had so don't really expect it to last several years like my Dell.

We bought an MSI laptop and havent had a problem with it, its been 2 years.
