Can anyone help me? I've had my ipod now for a little over six months and I believe I have tried almost everything.
Whenever I plug it in to the computer it takes well over 10 minutes for the computer (running on XP) to recognise the USB device as my ipod. Then the ipod updater starts running and takes a further 10-20 minutes checking the software on the ipod and EVERY SINGLE TIME tells me my software is out of date or cannot be read and says I must wipe everything and start over. (The updater is now 22/2/05)

This is extremely frustrating!
I have tried updating the itunes software and updating the ipod updater and still this continues.
The only part I have managed to speed up is if I manually open the updater it will recognise the ipod sooner but still wants to restore everything everytime!
Yes, I have changed the settings to manually move files from itunes library to ipod but it seems to have problems before that..

Can this be helped? It is not the ipod because I managed to plug it into a friends' laptop with ease!

Will try anything!

I think I have solved it... though not in the usual way. Someone recommended I try Yamipod - perhaps you all are aware of the phenomenon of these other ipod updaters but I was not. I simply opened it up - it recognised the pod immediately... so while it was working away I opened itunes and hey presto! It's all fine. It's going to be annoying to have to open up Yamipod everytime I want to use itunes but if that's the way it works till silly old Apple update their itunes version above 4.7.1.30 and fix all these silly bugs then that's the way it's going to have to be.

Try it - I think I'm the converted... will be switching completely if apple don't get their act into gear!

Thanks for the help!

You've only had it for six months? That's still within the warrenty. Stop by your local Apple store. That's what I did with mine when it started acting up, they got it fixed up for me. I broght my PC laptop with me. Got a few dirty looks. 🙂

There is a new update!. And when the pop up shows up hit "update" and not "format". www.ipodlounge.com will answer anything Ipod related. The reason most ppl have these issues is usually user error. I have 2 Ipods have not had any trouble.

sounds like typical windoze having problems once again.
