Hey, I'm going into my P2 year soon and will begin IPPE hours at Publix once a week for four hours. I tried the search function to inquire what is so great about Publix, but really found little on the topic. Some people say it's great, but they're not that specific. So, can anyone tell me what is it like to complete hours there? Also, considering that I will be an intern, why is it that we don't get paid? I've read about interns at other schools getting paid for hours at various pharmacy chains, but realize I won't be getting paid. What's the difference? Are other interns getting paid simply because they're working a part-time job in addition to completing their unpaid IPPE work? Please tell me how this works, as I have limited knowledge about this. i believe students at the northeastern university program in mass are paid during ippe. they've had a paid coop program in place since the early 1900's so they are exempt from the "no pay ippe"
unfortunately i go to school down the street at mcphs so my ippe must be unpaid 😡

publix isn't as great interning there as it is working there. Interning anywhere retail still sucks. But yeah, i can guarantee you Publix will not be paying students for IPPE, ever.

Correct. IPPE are school hours to expose students to pharmacies and therefore are not paid hours.

I heard that some schools have a set-up where students get paid while on rotations but I don't know if that's true or not.

If the intern work is for IPPE (Intermediate) or APPE (Advanced) coursework - the intern cannot be paid.

Intern for school = you pay to work
Intern for employed position = you get paid to work

However, there is no way to discern this on the Hour's log (is that a possessive s???). So the Board of Pharmacy, at least for Oregon, has no way to tell the difference. Which is an odd lack of differentiation - but there it is.

I also did my P2 hours at Publix for a semester. It was boring and slow. People say Publix is great because there is no drive through, but they do have some stores with a drive thru window. Generally, the volume is low. People drop of their scripts, shop for groceries, pick up their scripts and go home. You don't have people staring at you, waiting for their meds.

Working for Publix is good because it is a privately owned company. You are given stock. The pharmacy is closed on holidays. They focus more on patient care than script volume. You generally don't see the big CII orders.
