In the context of current plans to cease ACGME accredited VIR fellowships on 2020, it seems that it's going to be impossible to get board certified through alternate pathway for VIR soon. Any thoughts?

The alternate pathway is nearly dead anyways. It was originally designed to increase the number of diagnostic radiologists because there was a shortage of people to read films in the 90s and early 2000s.

But to answer your question: It will be impossible to get board certification in IR through any sort of alternate pathway. You will have to complete an IR/DR residency or a DR residency and then an IR independent fellowship.
