Hi there,

I've been searching through the forums trying to find out if there is much difference between the 2 systems for those wanting to return to NA. I've applied to Ireland this cycle and have had one interview so far, but the tuition and living costs are giving me second thoughts. I've done a ton of research into the Irish schools but left the Australian schools alone. Basically is there any advantage in going to an Irish school vs an Australian school, or vice-versa? Thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Jocks

With regards to the USMLE, there is no difference, neither offer you any assistance with regards to the exam so you have to take a prep course or find a tutor. Pricewise, Australian schools might be a bit less expensive unless you plan to live in Sydney. The weather is a lot nicer in Australia versus the Emerald Isle.
One clear advantage Australia offers is that there is somewhat of a chance that you can stay here to work if you enjoy Australia. I think the attrition(drop out and kick out rate) is higher in Ireland than in Australia. I would say the vast majority of students in the Australian programs will survive the course.

If you have a prior university degree, Australia has numerous graduate-entry programs which are only 4 years vs. 5-6 years for the Irish programs. So, Australia will save you about $50,000 in tuition and living costs vs. an Irish 5-year program and almost $100,000 vs. a 6-year. Also, the Australian Dollar is currently less expensive than the Euro which will translate to even more financial savings.

Irish programs tend to be traditional lecture style whereas Australia is big on the PBL approach. I don't think either system has a significant advantage here - it tends to be a personal preference for which system you prefer to study under.

Other than that, I believe both systems are respected in North American and are equivalent in terms of returning to North America for practice.
