I know this subject has been discussed before..nonetheless, what is the probability of being called back to AD with a remaining IRR committment after being released from active duty while attending a civilian residency training program?

If you do get called back...are you given a delay or exemption?

1) Navy has not called anyone back and has no plans to do so.

2) If they did, they might give an exemption or delay, but it would be case by case.

thanks NavyFP...I appreciate the info

Anyone know if this is in writing somewhere? I am currently on the civilian match interview trail, and several of my interviewers have asked how I know the Navy will not call me back to the IRR during residency? Is there an official policy/instruction stating that such an IRR callback would be deferred until after completion of a civilian residency?

The IRR is a plan for call back. Why do you think it exists?

I will rephrase. The Navy at the present time has no intentions of reactivating members from the IRR. It is not in any of the manpower projections through 2012. Even under the current projected manning shortfalls due to recruiting, there has been no discussion to alleviate this with recalls from the IRR or stop loss.

I don't think there has ever been a civilian resident on IRR called up during residency.

This also raises the question: are IRR folks, currently pursuing a civilian residency/fellowship, considered "employees" (since after all they're getting a civilian paycheck)? If the residents/fellows get a W-2 at the end of the tax year I would say "yes."

If so, does the law which guarantees job protection to activated reservists also apply to them, meaning they would have a guaranteed spot back in their training program upon release from active duty ????

This is all a moot point at present. The Navy has no shortage of GMOs. And that is what you would be called back to be. The Navy will realign there GMO Billets to an all opperational deployable GMO force prior to ever attempting to reactivate someone from IRR to be a GMO. Think about the congressional that would stem from this.
