I am an M3 and as of late have been interested in optho. At my school we cant really do a rotation in optho before the 4th year. Is this too late to evaluate it as a career and then to get started on the applications, LOR and personal statement? Also, how key is optho specific research if i have completed other research?

It is possible. The most important aspect of your application will be your medical school grades, USMLE 1 scores and personal statement and letters from ophtho faculty. Successful candidates have done research in other specialties of medicine and I think many programs out there understand that not everyone was born knowing that they wanted to be an ophthalmologist. Bottom line, if you have a strong application, apply early and to a broad range of programs, I do not think that your late decision will affect you.
