Is a 30 enough?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It really depends of your breakdown as well. I had a 31, but a 7 for verbal. I received two acceptances [one with a great scholarship], and multiple interviews (so many that I didn't attend some).

If you're a cali student, forget it. I didn't even get a secondary from UCI and UCLA. They are very picky on your numbers, even though I had great research, ECs, and GPA (3.9+) from UCLA.

In short, I don't think 30 is enough if you can do better. As most have noted, the whole package is very important. If you have a 10,10,10 you are a strong candidate. I know others who've gotten into UCSD with that score.

Not if your GPAs a 3.0.

Joyssoul, no sweat. Also, I can see how someone could easily peruse SDN and quickly get the impression that 31 was a subpar score. I believe that you'll be fine if you get your application in earlier (perhaps by July) and apply to a variety of schools. Remember that there is a large element of luck. Therefore, don't take rejections personally or as a sign that you're not qualified. Fix what you can, but don't try to perfect something that's already more than adequate.

oh my, im so happy to see this thread. i have a 30, applying this year. but the problem is that i got this score the third time i took the mcat...first time i got a 27 (10 BS, 10PS, 7VR) and second time i got a 24 (7 BS, 8 PS, 9 VR) - i had a very bad summer....and this cycle, i have a 30 (11 BS 10 PS 9 VR).....and my gpa is 3.76. im going to apply very broadly and early - can someone please tell me i have a chance somewhere? this is my second time applying (last time i only applied to 6 schools though)

yes you have a chance.

I have a 29 with a "6" on Verbal. I got in somewhere. I also applied late.
So if it's possible for me, it's possible for alot of people.

Oh as for your numbers for Cali....I got almost totally crunked by cali...

With my 6 on verbal and a total score of 29... I only got secondaries from

UCLA Charles Drew
UCLA
UCDavis
UCSD

I got rejected presecondary from
UCSF
UCI

Interviewed
only UCDavis

So I think you need ideally an even score of 30 or higher to be eligible for Cali.

Scgroat, thanks for your advice. I looked through MSAR and I saw that my numbers were the median of some schools' matriculants, but then I came on SDN and read about applicants with 36S and 3.9 GPA. And of course, I panicked a little. 🙄 You're right, it is a perfectly good score. I'm even a little proud of the 11 in verbal because English is my second language. I guess I'll just try to improve on the personal statement and then have it out within the next few weeks.

Again, thanks.

Nope definitely not. I'm assuming Middle Eastern means Arab in this context. It is Caucasian.

well, I've met many Arabs getting interviews from UCSD with lower stats than asians. I don't know about the other UCs though. If you have a problem with it go complain to the Dean of UCSD

enough? it depends. I mean for some ppl in this forum, even 40 isn't very satisfactory.
