Is a non-invasive cardiolgist a stressful career

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yes, a very informative thread

before we get into whether life is "stressful"....what does a non-invasive cardiologist do? is it still fairly procedural with stethoscoping, stress tests, and echos, or are there procedures that i'm missing?

thanks

I hear the "stethoscoping" can be quite a stressful procedure.

Interventional stethoscopy is a new and upcoming modality that many cardiologists are now using. It's also great exercise. I like to get my day started with a good 1-2 hours of vigorous stethoscoping.

It all started when those dirty GI guys began making so much money with colonoscopy. Cardiologists got jealous and started scoping people's steths back to back all day long in the procedures rooms. I think it's unethical to have patients ferried in and out of the stethoscopy rooms like they're running a manufacturing plant.

this thread has convinced me to pursue cardiology following residency with an ultimate goal of pursuing interventional stethoscopy. Thanks SDN...

Well yankeesfan, since nobody else is helping you, I'll give you the best answer I can muster. Non-interventional cardiologists still can spend a lot of time doing diagnostic catheterizations without engaging in therapeutic interventions (like stenting). Additionally, they medically manage a host of cardiac diseases, such as post-MI pt's, CHF, arrhythmias, etc. You can also get into echocardiography as well.

There is a bit more stress than say family practice, but when everything is said and done, you can determine the amount of stress in your life. If you are comfortable not making as much money as other cardiologists, then you can choose to have a smaller practice and make less money but have less stress; alternatively, I know a cardiologist who consistently roams the halls in our ER looking for patients to admit.

My $0.02.

thanks for the response muscles.

i'm glad i could bring a little humor to the forums.

keep on stethoscoping ;-).
