So I took my first Organic Chemistry test and got a 67% and the class average was a 70% ... not too far off, but if the prof. probably doesn't curve the course (she said she prob. wouldnt) would i be better off withdrawing from it...but going to class/learning it so next semester it will be a review (hopefully) or sticking it out and possibly getting a low C?

Is a "w" better than a C/C- in Orgo I??

I don't want anyone to look at my transcript and think, "oh she couldn't hack chemistry, its just not realistic to think i could get 100%s on the next tests and get an A or high B in the class....

Any help please let me know!

Depends on how long you have until the drop date. Wait it out, if you already will definitely get a W, then just wait it out to see if shes going to curve it or not.

People are not responding to you because there's really no advice for us to give.

Good luck.

you gotta think about it both ways:

A W means that you pretty much "quit" the course, gave up, couldn't pass the course etc. A W on your transcript is going to raise some eyebrows.

On the Other hand a C/C-

will lower your GPA, isn't going to look that good on your transcript, BUT it shows that you passed the course and actually took a swing at it unlike a W. If you take the C but then possibley get A's and B's on your future classes then it won't be such a big deal anymore IMO. You have time to improve, I'd take the C, and then focus on my future classes and trying to get anything higher than a B+ in them.

Just my opinion 🙂

I took a W on O-chem 1 because after the first exam I found out it was the instructors first time teaching an undergrad class (he was previously teaching advanced graduate classes) and the entire class was clumped in a 10% distribution for the first exam with a median at about 35%. I wasn't willing to risk my ochem grade on random chance, seeing how well I guess compared to everyone else guessing. I got a solid A taking O-Chem I the following semester with an established undergrad professor and solid A's in Ochem II and Ochem Lab so I wonder how a W could hurt me. My guess is the W will make them absolutely certain to look at how you did in O-chem and seeing an A in all of them I can't imagine how they could think negatively of it. If you W make sure to get an A I suppose. BTW I haven't been accepted yet so my opinion doesn't really count for much! 😀

I think the majority would agree a W is better than a C, but definitely not better than a B.

C is better than a W. Will you withdraw from a patient that needs your help? I have talked to a medical school committee member about that, and she said a W looks bad.

Dumbest thing I have ever heard. Take the advice from a pre-med at your own risk. Maintaining GPA is paramount. One "W" will not hurt you as long as you get good grades the rest of this semester (mostly A/A-) and take O chem next semester AT THE SAME SCHOOL and rock it out.

You may be asked about it, so be prepared to give an explanation that doesn't make you sound like a whiny, can't-hack-it, pantie-waist. (What I would say: I was a young, inexperienced undergrad who underestimated the difficulty of the course, I withdrew, focused my efforts on the rest of my classes, and took the course again the following semester with the right mind set and got an A in the course. It was definitely a learning experience for me, etc.)

Disclaimer: If you have multiple W's in the same class, or even in different classes, then it is a red flag. One or two W's max.

Good luck

👍👍👍👍

totally agree w/ u

withdraw, but be prepared to never withdraw from another class. 1 W won't hurt u much..

Thanks a lot for the advice.

I think i am going to take this next quiz and if it does not go well I am going to withdraw from the course but keep attending class. Also, I will just pick up an 8 week class to count toward my BA Bio. major...that way my credit hours don't drop to 13.

Thanks and I plan on never "w" a course ever again don't worry !

That's really annoying that it isn't curved. I can honestly say that I scored a 54% (actually above average) on one orgo final but ended up with a B+ in the class (median grade=B-). Orgo is just a terrible, terrible class. Don't feel too bad about it, but try and improve considerably the second time around.
