I looked at a lot of different specialties and I was torn between a number of them at the end of M3. I did not think either Emergency Medicine or FM would be for me but I’ve fallen in love with EM and FM as my second choice.

Am I the only one? I can’t be.

I don't think you're the only one who's surprised by their choice (ex. 'didn't think I'd like surgery but turns out I loved it').

Though I think usually (based on what I've seen) people tend to think it makes sense in the end (ex. but have always enjoyed working with my hands, being focused on solving one problem, etc.)

I'm a little surprised FM is your second choice (anesthesia and IM tend to be popular second choices among EM people at my school), but hey everyone's different.

I'm glad you found something you liked!

I was very surprised, I'm actually going into a field that I was 100% sure I was going to hate going into 3rd year. Did that rotation early on and loved it. Did an elective to make sure it wasn't just the rotation and loved that too. Kind of sucked since I didn't really get a chance to explore the field more/show interest during pre-clinical years, but I'm pretty happy with how things have gone thus far (hoping to feel the same after the match).

I’m not surprised at all. EM and FM are similar in their generalist/proceduralist approach with the difference being acuity and continuity. IM is very different from EM and while anesthesia is procedural, it lacks the diagnostic aspect of EM and FM. If FM paid more and had less BS from insurers it would be a lot more popular.

At least for me no. I knew what I wanted to go into going into medical school give or take. And I still am interested in that.
