Hey everyone..I've been hearing from people that BU is really generally bad, very expensive, with many weird people there..Do you think those are all rumours about this university, or is it the truth?

If I get into BU and nowhere else, I would be the happiest man in the world.

Its still dental school. It will still prepare you for whatever you want to accomplish. Its up to the students to take advantage.

True, but will i be preparing in a suitable environment??..I mean i visited the university's website and i really liked it, but i'm afraid it would be different when i actually go there since many people made it sound like the worst place to go..

i have a good friend who just graduated from BU dental- he really liked it, and felt like he got a good education out of it. he likes his job and works for a Gentle Dental practice now. He did tell me that the loans suck, but if you are considering any private institution, that's just something that comes with the territory.

As for BU itself- i grew up in the boston area and i love it. it's not as big and congested as NYC, and has some really beautiful spots. the medical campus isn't in the greatest area, but it's hardly something to worry about if you're smart about your personal safety (and that applies anywhere).

It's one of the easier schools to get into, there's no question, but acceptance rates aren't all that's important in discerning what is a good school and what's not. if you're a diligent student and take advantage of the opportunities presented, there's no reason why you can't get a great education at BU.

(keep in mind, i don't go there, i just know people who do :p )

its a third tier school right? so generally although it is a dental school and get you where you wanna go, it still comes down to, does it matter to you? if you can practice doing what yo u wanna do, thats all that matter, isnt it?

My friend is going into D2 at BU and likes it.

How do you know it is 3rd tier?

my thoughts exactly...

from what i saw at my interview, i think BU is a good school....it was just a little expensive for me and it was in a cold cold place......i'm a spoiled californian... :D

BU is a great school. I don't understand why there is such an anti-BU rumor going around SDN. The teachers are great, the school has good facilities, Boston is an awesome city, and the students are friendly and fun. Students get a great clinical education and do as well as any other dental school. The tuition is extremely expensive, but so are the tuitions at any private dental school.

I am enjoying my time here so far (went out to a club with a bunch of dental students from all 4 years last night), even though we already have our first anatomy exam on monday.

Dont believe everything that people say on SDN, there are a lot of jealous idiots in these boards...

B.U. is a great school, I actually choose it over UMaryland because the students were WAY more friendly during the interview here and also because of the location (Boston is one amazing city).

My suggestion is for you to come for the interview, take a look around, and make up your own mind (IF you get an interview invitation, people claim its easy to get into, thats BS, no dental school is "easy", you still need decent stats).

Yeah, our website does rule!

!

Are you kidding me?? You chose one school over another because the students at the interview were nice to you???

Wow!

I have no idea about the education at BU. The one thing I know firsthand about BU is that they accepted me on Dec 1 and demanded a $2500 deposit!! I mean $2,500? I had no choice to pay because it was my only acceptance at that time. That money went to waste and I felt that they knew exactly what they were doing. sucks.

BU is very easy to get in. I had my interveiw at Dec last year. Had the most ridiculous interview in my life. The women showed no respect to student. She took a phone call from her husband, and said to the phone :"oh,honey, that sounds great, let's have dinner there!" Oh man, and then she turned to me and asked me whether I had taken biochem before, and of course, the answer can be found on my application and transcript easily. Our conversation lasted less than five minutes. I got accepted two days later. My point is, I don't think they really care to find out who you are in the interveiw, that was just a show. They look at your numbers, if good, you are in. Very easy. And i don't like that.

If you really like boston, and don't care about the high tuitions and high cost of living here, go to TUFTS or Harvard. They are that much better.

No THEY ARE NOT! All the schools here in town are pretty decent, Harvard and Tufts have crappier patient pools and fewer chairs then B.U.

Are you a maryland resident? Because I thought that non residents need stellar grades to get into Maryland. Dude, if you really did get into maryland, you made a HUGE mistake by going to a more expensive private school, IMO. If I could have gone to a state school, ANY state school, I would have, regardless of where it was or how the other interviewees acted towards me.

BTW, I'd settle for a porno store next to my school rather than getting mugged by some junkie looking for crack money outside yours. And where exactly is this store? I need to stock up for my new apartment. :D

Do you have any numbers or facts to back this up?

Hey guys..I really didn't start this thread for the sake of having arguments over the fact that BU is worse than most other universities...All dental schools are good, but each one is good in its own way and i'm sure that there is atleast one thing that makes BU unique...I have only limited dental school choices on my Scholarship form, and Tufts or Harvard aren't included..The only ones i'm able to select from are 3 from BU, UMKC, VCU, UPitt, Creighton and West Virginia..Now, based on what i have searched through university websites and the abundant threads, i'm thinking that the most competent 3 are BU, UMKC and UPitt...Do you think that's true?

Every dental school is competent, otherwise they would lose their accredation. If money is not a factor, go to a school where you would be comfortable spending 4 years. I'm not just talking about the city, I'm talking about where the school is in the city.

Congrats on shooting down your own credibility

Hey Fatal
Of those school's go to the cheapest, who cares what others think about it, you will be a dentist if you get through dental school anywhere

just wondering...did you consider maryland? if you were choosing between maryland and tufts even though you are not a maryland resident...would you have chosen maryland over tufts? (since it is a state school?) i'm curious since i'm considering both those schools...thanks!
