So should I bother taking these courses? How many schools require them?

They were probably scared off by my mathematics GPA 😛

God how I hated calculus. I still fail to understand how calculus is any determinant whatsoever of whether you are a good scientist or clinician. I got B's in College Alg and Trig and then got B-'s in both calc classes... then I was stupid enough to take calc-based physics. That was probably the most idiotic thing I could have done - I ruined my GPA.
