Is getting certified and getting a pharmtech license the same thing?

I was planning to sign up for the certification exam offered by PTCB but my sister told me about her friend having a license and not being certified, so now i'm confused. Will I be able to work as a tech by just taking the ptcb certification exam (or do I need a license)? Also, the ptcb application asks about school where trained and employer etc- I self-studied and am not employed by a pharmacy; do i have to be trained by a school??

I know sometimes it's easier to just post and wait to have people answer, but you can get answers faster if you just use the search function.

Whether you can work or not
Different states have different regulations. In all states I believe you must be registered with the state board of pharmacy. Whether you need to be certified or not depends on your state and you should do some research on it.
