Ok so my boyfriend is a neuroscience major like me and he has aspirations for becoming a psychiatrist, but his freshman year and first semester sophomore year he only earned a 2.00 GPA and even lower science GPA. He was recently diagnosed with major depression and his family has been going through some stresses, but now he's trying his best to get back on his feet and get into a good med school. Thus far he has no EC's and even in a best-case scenario he can only get a 3.0 core GPA and 3.3 science GPA and hopefully he'll get a high MCAT. Is it possible for him to get into med school with these stats and if not what can he do to get into med school. I'm really concerned about his future so any input would be useful. Thank you!

First of all, no, he's not screwed (although I suspect that some people will disagree with me). There is always more you can do to improve an application, it just takes time. He needs ECs, especially clinical experience (probably at least 100 hours). It would also be helpful to have some form of volunteering. Even people with 4.0 and 520 mcats will be rejected if they don't have clinical experience. He also needs to do well on the MCAT 510+ and will probably need to do a post-bac or SMP (1 year masters). Most importantly though he needs to take care of himself. It is only going to get harder from here as far as academics go. There are plenty of people with MDD in med school (unfortunately at significantly higher levels than the average population) but it has to be treated to be successful in class and clinical work.

tldr. No, he's not screwed. It's just a long path ahead.

If he can’t bring his A game to school then he should take some time off undergrad. Med school isn’t going anywhere. He can volunteer and work on his EC. Maybe take the time off to study and take the MCAT. When he goes back to undergrad he needs to kill it. Assuming it all falls in place he would competitive for DO schools.

Hey there, if that’s his goal taking some time off to help & get depression taken care of is really in his best interest. Academically he’s going need to rock his next semesters and up his game if he wants to compete, and to do that you’ve got to have your ‘stuff’ together. A heart to heart on that topic might be a good idea. He better appreciate having someone to advocate for him like that!

He needs to get his health addressed and treated and take some time to get himself together. You shouldn’t be trying to figure out how he can get into medical school at this point. He is years away from even applying and frankly he doesn’t need the pressure. He needs to be well before he can even think about the future. To answer your question, he might be okay for DO but that decision isn’t important right now. The best thing you can do is be kind and caring and encouraging. Don’t keep reminding him he has to work on his grades. Let him figure it out. Let him make the decisions about his future when he’s well enough to do it.

Please don't get me wrong I did not post this to increase his stress. Honestly, my only concern is his health and happiness, but he asked me to figure out his chances and I'm trying my best to help him as much as I can.
