I want to destroy the competition? Think about it. I could either go to MD school and compete for class rank amongst a bunch of gunner braniacs who scored an average of a 30-31 MCAT or go to a podiatry school and compete against people who scored 23’s and 24’s.

It would be like undergrad all over again –dominating the curve without even trying.

Plumbing school would be even better

.... except you'll be a podiatrist... for life.
Oh yeah, you really showed them. You can tell all the MDs you meet that you graduated at the 99th percentile at Podiatry school. They'll totally bow down to you.

Do it! It's a great idea. I promise it will be awesome.

everybody in podiatry school will want to sleep with you!

Sounds like the threat of gunners has given the OP... (cue sunglasses)... cold feet.

the folks who historically gravitate toward the middle or low end of any class will usually manage to do so regardless of their competition. Part of the reason competition as a motivator only works to an extent is that you believe you don't really ever have to outrun the bear, only enough of the other campers. You will show up expecting to coast, and that never generates as good a performance as you think. More than a few superstars on paper get owned by folks who are late bloomers. Look at it like Apollo Creed in the first Rocky movie -- you may think you've selected a scrub, but that doesn't mean it's ever the cakewalk you hoped. Scrubs don't always know they are supposed to roll over for you.

Why would you raft when you can obviously yacht?

I know this is really really hard to get down (no sarcasm intended), but I find myself much more motivated when I compete against myself.

Just do the best that you can do. For yourself, not to be better than others.

Competition can fuel you sometimes, but it only takes you so far. You just gotta believe in yourself and get back on your feet (couldn't resist sorry) when the going gets rough.

10/10 for creativity though! Nice post.

This is what I do. I feel it's even tougher to do this because you become so critical of yourself, but you become better and better. I has worked for me so far.

Do it. That way when you become a podiatrist, you can massage the feet of those who worked hard to become an MD (or DO, trying to avoid a debate here).

I'm going to pod school (31 MCAT).

I know 3 other people with >30 MCATs applying this cycle. We're not going because we want to "destroy" the competition. We're going because podiatry is an awesome specialty. You guys can make fun of us all you want, but in the end, we only have a 3 year residency, can perform surgery, and we work with a region of the body, not a system. That means we will never be bored because we do derm, path, biomechanic, ortho, invasive surgery, vascular surgery, etc etc.

So, while the majority of you match into IM, and get to do examinations of naked old men and switch them from one medication to another to see if their kidneys get better, I'll be working at the podiatry office I own from Monday-Thursday, never get calls at 3 in the morning, and never have a patient that I kill. I can take vacations whenever I want. I can practice however I want - no boss/hospital telling me how to work.

For all of you that plan on matching into surgery. Have fun with your 5+ years of residency. My residency is 3 years, and I'm going to have a family life, and still be in the OR.

So keep on laughing. Laugh all you want. But me and my 31 are going to pod school.

by not including "DO" in the sentence and using it in the parenth., you just insulted DO's lol..that is passive aggressive. 😀 The equivalent of a humble brag.

jk: there's really no way to avoid the debate

What's a DO? Are they similar to doctors?

Wait... I think so. They're the ones that believe they can heal your mind and spirit with their hands as well as prevent injuries, aren't they?

Supposedly, the Chief Practitioner (and founder of osteopathy) could even shake a child and stop scarlet fever, croup, diphtheria, and cure whooping cough in three days by wringing its neck.

Of course, I kid, but the reality is that its history is, for lack of a better word, interesting.

I'm pre-med but still, 5+ years of surgery on anything other than feet (or eyes, gross) sounds pretty cool to me.

Better yet, do a second, then third, then fourth, then fifth undergrad and dominate five times.

1. The majority of medical students match into something other than IM
2. Most every physician who owns their own practice does not get calls at 3am.
3. You may never kill a patient, but if you never have a patient at risk of dying, then you will never actually save a life. I, on the other hand, prefer to save hundreds of lives for every one of my future patients that die.
4. 31 isn't special, sorry.
5. General surgeons may spend 2 more years in residency, but they'll still be making 3x more than you every year.

You should stop mentioning your MCAT score
It's fairly embarrassing on your end.

31 is...pedestrian~
"enough but not great"

Yup. 31 might be impressive in the pre-pod world, but in terms of matriculated MD students it's borderline low. Lots of DO applicants are at the 31 level too now.

Children, don't be ******s. A 31 is a very respectable score. Nevertheless, it won't matter one bit what you got once you're in med school, podiatry school, plummer school, or whatever you decide to do.... NOBODY cares. When it does come up, it's more of a novelty, just like when it's discovered that you got interviewed at HMS or whatnot. No one really cares for longer than about 10 seconds.

rephrased - "i won't do anything important"

as is the MD side of medicine, so this is a pretty stupid point.

True, except that we have for the most part left that behind. DO programs have maintained their OMT depts, which actually makes it a valid point.
