Don't call too often or it may have the opposite effect of what you were hoping for.

But does calling to show interest once prior to any decision made give you any tangible advantage?

No. Send an update letter if the school accepts them AND you actually have something worthwhile to note.

Calling just gets you to the busy office staff who will most likely forget you as soon as they hang up. So many people call them asking the same questions. If you send an update letter it might get added to your file.

At least two school where I interviewed specifically told applicants to NOT send any updates unless they were requested.

I don't see the point about calling, unless you have a question.

I emailed schools pre-interview and post to check my status. All were very helpful and told me the information I was looking for. I emailed the school that I was wait-listed at to see if there was a chance I'd be moved off the list, they forwarded my email on to the admissions director to look over my file. But I didn't contact to help out my application, just to check my status. My advice is it's fine to inquire about your application, but don't become a pest about it.
