...apply to pharm school AND medical school? The University of South Carolina has a pharm and med school, would the ad coms of each school question my intentions?

It's not completely unheard of, but expect to address the issue if the school finds out... especially if you're applying to two programs at the same institution.

Think about it. What do you have to prove to these schools? You have to prove you are dedicated to the practice of medicine or pharmacy. What does applying to two programs shows them. It might come across to them that you just want a prestigous career without devouting yourself. That is just my 2 cents take it or leave it.

they might trash your applications if you apply to both at the same school. you're going to have to call them and ask if you can apply to both programs.

I wouldn't apply to 2 different programs at the same schools. What if you come across the same interviewer?

I was going to apply to both Med and Pharm School for the 2009 year but then my MCAT results came back and I got accepted to Pharm school.

Hmm I was wondering the same thing...like how bad would it look to apply to two diff programs at the same school...if you weren't sure which direction you wanted to go..or if you wanted to raise your chances a bit by applying to more than one program. Not that I was planning on doing this...but was curious about how the school would look at that.

weigh out your own pros and cons of attending med school vs pharm school and the future it brings...i think if you are focused in one you will be more successful

I would expect this to be viewed very negatively. Pharmacy and medicine are different professions, and the fact that you aren't decided between them does not reflect very well on your self-awareness. Both professions also require that you be dedicated to them - and you cannot prove it if you are applying to two different fields. I would never do it at the same school, but I also would never do it at all. Decide what you want to be when you grow up and stick with it. For example, I know I would have enjoyed medical school more than pharmacy school, as I thought pharmacy school was one of the most horribly boring things to ever happen to me, and I always was interested in etiology of diseases a lot more than in the treatment of them. However, I also knew that I would have hated being a doctor, and making such a significant time and financial investment is not worth it if you aren't going to work in the field (or be miserable working there), therefore I chose pharmacy. I did not like school, but I do like the opportunities it has opened for me, and I do like my job.

It's not frowned upon but you might want to consider if you really want to be a Pharmacist. There are those who think going into pharmacy is a good substitute for not getting into medical school, but that just wastes your time and money and a seat for another pharmacy student.

I think the same goes the other way around, but it's less likely a person gets rejected from all their pharmacy schools and get accepted into medical school... or maybe that's just me talking out my bum.

Either way, make sure you can live with the other option if your primary one does not work out; dropping out a year later doesn't help anyone.

I've been told by a St. John's admin that there is an intense jealousy between Pharm and Med. You should never mention to one that you are applying to the other. Especially when applying to Pharm.
