Is it hard to start up a practice cold right after school?

I am asking this b/c it seems many newly optometry grads are having hard time starting up a private practice due to the high tution debt and market saturation in many big cities. So, many of them end up working commericially and forced to practice in area where they don't wish to.

So, I am wondering what's the situation like for newly dental grads? Do most of them work as associate for awhile and practice solely once they paid off tution loan? Or Do most them take the risk and start up a practice cold right away?

Thanks for reply! 👍

Who has 250-500K available right out of school? You can take more loans but you are looking at almost a million dollars in debt!

From what I hear, most if not all, do an associateship with someone. The practicing dentists who post on this forum have hammered into us that most of the learning takes place once you're out of dental school and working for someone.

Yes...my dentist graduated 4 years ago from UofT and joined a practice as an associate...he recently bought the practice...thats another option

i'd find an old doc that plans to sell in 1-2 years...
...get the selling price in writing.. and then do the associate to buy-out thing.
