Hey,

So after my 5 year MBBS, lets say I don't get into a U.S resdiency I want, and decide to do Foundation Year 1. Then I get into a residency in the U.S I want after the 1st year, can I leave for U.S? Or do I have to complete Foundation Year 2?

Thanks.

You can leave - though if you ever want to come back, may not be such a good idea!

You might want to look into seeing if you can get your first year in the US accredited as FY2 - it can be done, but they may not allow it since you'll effectively be repeating the house officer year.

But no problem leaving after FY1.

imagine how hard it is to get a residency in the US for a FMG - now multiply that by...a lot. that's how hard it is for a non-EU citizen to get a Foundation Year in the UK.

that is how i understand it so far, and how it's always been explained to me. please correct me if i'm wrong. but if there are barely enough foundation jobs nowadays for EU-grads, are there really any left for non-EUs?

You're right, it is tough for Non-EUs. One minor detail I forgot to include is that I'm a British citizen, so I'll be considered an EU grad. So hopefully I can find a spot for Foundation Year 1.

assuming 'the system' is fixed by then😛 (which everyone is telling us it will be...)

Heh. Fingers crossed.

I get the joy of going into whatever the new incarnation of MTAS is next year for my specialty training.

I am NOT looking forwards to it. Especially since I've had a relatively painless experience for my foundation years.

:scared:

Is there any way to continue training in UK if you graduate from their med schools?

And do you guys think it'll get any better in like 5 or 6 years?

Oh, it'll be a completely different system in 5-6 years - virtually guaranteed. They've made such a cock up of it these past 2 years, they pretty much have to change it... I hope! :scared:

If you graduate from a UK med school and are an EU citizen, you're fine. Unless the government expands training numbers though, there will shortly be more graduates than there are jobs - not something that was ever a problem before.

Exactly the same is happening in Ireland with the government funding the new 4 year graduate courses... This year between Trinity and UCD 32 graduates did not get intern positions. Albeit they were non-EU citizens but this is the first year that this has happened.

from what i understand, as a british graduate u are eligible to do your foundation here regardless if u are an EU citizen or not, but after foundation it's hard to go further if u are non EU. i am in final yr at cambridge but i hate this system and i am thinking about doing a phd in USA and work there later. really dont like the MTAS system its just rubbish!!!!!
