Is it necessary to join some EM associations/groups, such as emra, saem, acep, aaem, or ccme? Would that bring lots of benefits? Or, is it easier to find a job with the membership?

Should I join them during the intern, or , I can do it later.

Thanks!

There are many benefits to joining with these groups besides just finding a job and looking good on a resume. As a medical student I would advise you to join ACEP if you are interested in bread and butter EM or SAEM if you have a strong research interest. These are very cheap as a medical student and will show your interest to residency programs. Additionally you will get a journal monthly that you can read in order to learn about what is going on in EM.

ACEP/EMRA gives you a decent little pocket book too. I lost it within a matter of days but I remember it was quite nice.

Ditto that... Also try very hard to go to an ACEP national meeting if money and/or time warrents it. I have not been, but the MS I talk to who did say it was invaluable. They have a residency fair and several lectures by important people in EM about residency application process.

Thanks for all the replies, but I am still confused. 🙁

Which one is better, saem or acep? Seems that they have similar anual fees ($120), acep gives you more stuff, such as Annals of EM and acep update. I am interested in research, saem is a better choice?

Thanks again!

SAEM subscription gets you "Academic Emergency Medicine", which is a research journal. When you join ACEP, you also get EMRA membership, which is super-valuable. SAEM is more research-oriented, whereas ACEP is more focused on clinical practice. Thus, the ACEP newsletter is better for keeping abreast of current issues, while the Academic EM journal lets you know what research is going on in the field. Both annual meetings have medical student symposiums.

Honestly, I enjoy both memberships - if I had to choose one as an EM applicant, I guess it would be ACEP for the EMRA benefits and current EM topics. Many residency programs will pay your dues for ACEP/EMRA and SAEM once you're an intern.

i would get to know all of the organizations. EMRA and AAEM-RSA are geared towards students and residents. EMRA has been around longer, but AAEM-RSA is growing pretty fast and is very involved politically.

Additionally, for anyone who is going through the application process right now, the AAEM-RSA has a benefit called EM Select that is very useful when applying to and interviewing at residencies. It allows to to keep and track information. You can find this at www.emselect.org

As I said, you should look into all of them. I joined both AAEM-RSA and EMRA.

Do these groups send you a reminder to resubscribe? Cause I don't remember exactly which I am a member of...if not both. I know I am sad. But I do get mail now!
