I am taking 5 courses this semester and I was wondering if school's are ok with you only take 4 courses. I'm taking organic chem 2 right now but I was thinking of dropping it and taking it in the summer. Im a canadian student so I would only be taking (2.0 credits instead of 2.5 credits). Is this ok?

4 course is absolutely fine!

At my school, 4 is considered a full load, and anything more you either have to get permission, or are an engineer (which require 5 courses)

However, if you do drop Organic, make sure it doesn't appear as a "Drop" on your transcript... I know this is possible if you drop it early in the semester, it just disappears completely, at least at my school.

3 is considered full where I am, but most students take 4, occasionally some take 5 or 6, but that's typically because they are either lower credit, easy, or P/F type.

In other words, 4 courses is absolutely fine. As long as you have enough credits to be considered a full time student at your school, then you're good.

Like mentioned before, I would be careful with dropping Orgo though.

Thanks for the responses. I don't mean to be offensive, I was just wondering if a CANADIAN student could please reply if you know for a fact that taking 4 (2.0 credits) courses instead of 5 (2.5) is ok for canadian and/or american dental schools. (for eg. taking 3 courses at a canadian school definitely wouldn't look good). I would just feel more comfortable b.c canadian students prb know the credit system better than some americans

Hey, I'm a Canadian student. By my understanding, you are fine to take 4 or even 3 courses per semester as long as you are considered FULL-TIME student at your university. That's for American dental school. Now, for Canadian dental school, if you want to apply to U of Toronto, they said in their website that they do NOT require Full course load. However, for Western Ontario university, they only look at your last two years of undergraduate and look for full course load with at least 3 or 4 (I'm not sure) upper-year courses. Hope it helps. 🙂
