One of the med schools I will apply to is a few miles from where I live, which is why it's on the top of my list. Is this inappropriate to mention this in an interview?

Location is certainly a legitimate deciding factor.

I think you can absolutely mention the location, but this will not go as well at schools in places like New York City and LA as it will in more rural areas. If you mention it, your social support network and family ties should be the motivating factor you cite and not the location itself as those are incredibly legitimate reasons to prefer a specific medical school's location.

It would be very appropriate. When interviewers asked me why I applied to their school, location was always one of the factors I brought up.

"I've always wanted to live in City so I researched medical schools near it. I found School X and from there found out Reasons A, B, and C and that is why I applied there.'

Location can be and often is a legitimate factor for applying to a school, just make sure you have reasons other than that to be there, plus it will show you've done your research.

Yes, the worst thing that can happen is that the interviewer disregards what you have to say about location and looks at you based on everything else.

Your address is on your application. We can presume the interviewer knows where the school is located. Two and two equals four. I usually open an interview asking if it is the applicant's first time in ___ but if the applicant is local, I make a joke about not asking that question and make some question /comment about the local area.

You really don't to point out the obvious.

I would agree with you wholeheartedly, but certainly not every interviewer reads applications with great attention. And granted, it shouldn't take a handful of amphetamines to notice an applicant's address, but there have been interviewers who have called me the wrong name. If asked a question about why you want to attend a particular school, just answer honestly and openly with information that makes sense, isn't offensive, and addresses the query.

In all of my interviews, location was a major point of discussion. Not at all inappropriate!

I think you would have to have a really good reason for mentioning location. Obviously, you like the area since you applied..especially if it's a major metro area...

If the interviewer prompts you on why location X then sing 'till the cows come home...but still have a well thought-out reason haha
